-Caveat Lector- INMATE WORKS LEGAL SYSTEM FROM BEHIND BARS (West Palm Beach, FL) - The web of fakery and greed spun by con- victed jewel dealer Jack Hasson for more than a decade continues to snare victims and clog up multiple court systems, while he sits in a South Carolina prison, defies a federal judge's orders and dabbles in French law. Hasson, serving 40 years for fraud and money laundering, spends his time in the federal penitentiary at Edgefield, S.C., filing "common law" court papers concocted with the aid of fellow in- mates. The documents include billion-dollar "judgments" against people Hasson perceives as enemies and attempt to persuade a French court not to release $20 million in laundered money to the U.S. government. Meanwhile, federal prosecutors have charged Irene Lois Robert- son, Hasson's longtime bookkeeper at his Palm Beach Gardens and North Palm Beach stores, with concealing his money-laundering, a felony punishable by up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Robertson, 61, pleaded not guilty at her June 29 arraign- ment and is out on $100,000 bond. Robertson and her husband, Pascal, also have agreed to repay $825,000 that Hasson gave her when he shut down his Palm Beach Gardens store in 1998. The money will go to Hasson's main fraud victim, retired businessman Aben Johnson of North Palm Beach, who paid Hasson more than $80 million for jewels later appraised at $6 million. The Robertsons had bought a home and three other pieces of property in Port St. Lucie with part of the money. A federal judge has ordered Hasson's former store manager, James Speiser, back to court to face a charge of violating probation. Speiser, who said he replaced real jewels with fakes and was paid $1.7 million to lie for Hasson, testified against him and got an 18-month sentence, plus three years' probation. Like Has- son, he's required to make restitution to the victims, and his probation officer says he didn't disclose the sale of a 1960 Corvette for $40,500. Former estate lawyer Scott Colton of North Palm Beach, serving three years for helping Hasson launder $26 million, now says he lied to his own attorneys about the scheme as well as to Has- son's other lawyers, the FBI and a federal grand jury. <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/";>www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
