I think the real insult is to the thousands if not millions of people who cannot
rely on that portion of the food industry that supplies them with safe meats. With
the millions of animals that have been slaughtered and burned (which I am sure
aren't real keen on their fates), whether from BSE / vCJD / MCD or hoof 'n mouth,
there seems to be "slight" problem with processes and procedures in how the critters
are being raised. This situation now extends to the European continent where even
more animals have been destroyed.
It has been unsafe for Americans to travel abroad for most of the last century,
foremost among reasons is participating (fighting and dying) in European wars. The
Cold War, e.g., precipitated the current condition wherein many hundreds of
thousands (if not millions) of Americans are being denied the opportunity to donate
blood, the most basic of all life fluids, simply because of a problem with the food
supply, now extending across a good portion of Europe.
Unfortunately, it is almost impossible for anyone to travel to Europe from anywhere
and avoid the food. I, for one, contracted a dormant form of tuberculosis as a
result of contact with food and water supplies in Asia Minor.
When one reads of the situation in New York or the policies being considered by the
American Red Cross to correspond to or surpass those already in place by the Food
and Drug Administration concerning blood, it becomes a human problem, not a statist,
imperial, or nationalistic issue of pride.
Blood don't know no better. It just is.
