Giving evidence for the first time in a trial that has lasted 20 months, Wouter Basson said he visited a mustard gas factory in Iraq where several factory workers died each week. He added that there were plenty of others to replace the dead. Basson said he was given a completely free hand by the white-led South African government and told to use whatever means were necessary, including bribery and blackmail, to build up the country's unconventional weapons programme, creating a database of germ agents and toxins for use against the government's enemies. The court has been told that a baboon foetus was hung outside the home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu as a magical warning, that poisoned beer was prepared by Basson's team to kill opposition guerrillas and that HIV-infected blood was dried and prepared for use as a biological agent. He flew to and from Europe and America using a number of front companies as Pretoria encouraged him to draw up the best possible database of scientific information in the 1980s. Basson, who denies 46 charges, including murder, fraud and drug trafficking, took the oath yesterday for the first time in what has become South Africa's most sensational trial from the apartheid era. Asked how he became head of the chemical and biological warfare programme, he replied: "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." He added that he viewed its creation as an "interesting intellectual problem". He has denied that he profited personally from the work and said he was not personally responsible for political assassinations carried out by agents using his toxins and claimed he was only following orders from senior government members. The evidence has at times appeared to be straight out of the pages of a spy thriller, but Basson, a respected and experienced cardiologist, exuded the air more of a boffin than a murderer. With his grey whiskers and dark suit he has attended day after day of often complex hearings, currently held in Court 8D of the High Court in Pretoria, as lawyers examined the work that earned him the nickname "Dr Death". Basson is expected to spend three days on the opening of his evidence before facing cross examination.
