The Court denied the petition by the Temple Mount Faithful to enter the Temple Mount to pray and lay the cornerstone on the Temple Mount. The plan to bring the cornerstone to the area near the Temple Mount has stirred the Muslims and many nations as well. Palestinians warned on Saturday that attempts to carry the 4.5-ton stone into the compound on Sunday would outrage Muslims. PLO leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction called for a "day of rage" on Sunday. (Just to make sure he is safe, Arafat's office said he would leave Gaza for a one-day visit to Morocco on Sunday for talks with King Mohammed on the security situation.) The Prime Minister's Office and the Foreign Ministry Saturday held talks with the governments of the United States, Egypt, Jordan and a number of European countries, and asked them to use their influence on the Palestinian Authority [PA/PLO] to prevent unrest during the ceremony. A senior member of the Waqf [Islamic "authority" on the Temple Mount] has warned the government: "We will react with a violent and harsh response never before experienced by the Israelis, because from our point of view, the Temple Mount is the crossing of a red line and no Muslim will allow it to be touched". "Go through, go through the gates; Clear the way for the people" [Isaiah 62.10a] The cornerstone can be seen on the Temple Mount Faithful's Web site located at: <http://www.templemountfaithful.org/>. An advertisement jointly signed by the Yesha Council of Jewish Settlements of Judea, Samaria and the Gaza District, the headquarters of the Temple Mount Faithful and Ha'Mikdash movements, and the council of Yesha rabbis calls on the public to gather Saturday afternoon around the gates to the Temple Mount for a prayer session. "Jews, prime ministers and their ministers have closed the gates of redemption to their people; they have denied their G-d; they have denied their temples," the advertisement reads. "This is what caused the destruction of the land. We won't be partners of leaders who block gates and make treaties with the enemy, who imagined finding peace and found shame instead. Against the will of the miserables of Zion, ministers, judges and Torah sages, the gates to the Temple Mount will be opened with the grace of G-d, and all lovers of Zion will go up to the mountain of G-d." The U.S. State Department issued a public announcement Friday placing "the entire city of Jerusalem off limits to Embassy staff and their dependents from Friday, July 27 through Sunday, July 29." ............................ :: YESHA RABBIS FOR TEMPLE MOUNT: The Rabbinical Council of Judea, Samaria and Gaza recently called on all rabbis to bring their communities to visit the Temple Mount - "in accordance with halakha (religious law)" - and it urged the Israel public to do the same. This is the first time a group of rabbis representing a substantial segment of the religious Zionist public has ruled it is permissible for Jews to ascend the Temple Mount, as long as certain areas are avoided. Most leading Torah sages have ruled that Jews are not allowed on the mount at all, lest they accidentally tread on the sites to which they would have been forbidden entry when the Temple was standing. The rabbis plan to ask the Yesha Council of Jewish settlements to organize mass trips to the mount from the settlements. Rabbi Dov Lior of Kiryat Arba noted that the rabbis will have to prepare maps of the mount to show Jews where they may go and where they are halakhically forbidden to walk. Rabbi Yitzhak Shilat of Ma'aleh Adumin added that since religious law does permit Jews to visit certain areas of the mount, "our right, obligation and ability to pray on the mount is many times greater than that of the Muslims, and we need to say this openly." The rabbis expressed their objections to the modern rabbinic opinion forbidding Jewish entry to the Mount, saying that the ruling has "distanced Am Yisrael from the site of the Holy Temple." Rabbi Dov Lior of Kiryat Arba urged rabbis who disagree with the Council's ruling to show respect for it nevertheless, arguing that public apathy toward the Temple Mount is one cause of the difficulties Israel is currently experiencing. ............................ :: PA/PLO ISSUES YESHA HIT LIST: The Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security service have warned a number of individuals in various official positions in the settlements to exercise greater caution in their daily activities. The warning followed a PA/PLO demand that more than 50 Israelis involved in "barbaric crimes" against the Palestinians be arrested. ............................ :: WHO IS REALLY RESPONSIBLE? Police continue to investigate the murder of the three Tamizi family members outside their Arab village of Idna (19 July), although a gag order has been placed on the proceedings. Some details have come to light, however, that cast doubt on the media's immediate identification of the murderers as Jews. Arutz-7 correspondent Haggai Huberman notes that no Israeli officials have seen the bodies, and in fact the only evidence that the Palestinians have allowed them to see was the car in which the victims were killed. In addition, the only eyewitnesses to the crime were Arabs. The Tamizi family was known to have had connections with Israeli security sources; Arab terrorists killed one of the family in Hebron, and another Tamizi also had run-ins with terrorists. Palestinian murderers have killed at least eight informants for Israel in the past few months. Itim News Agency reports that although bullet casings were not found on the scene when the police first arrived, two or three hours later local Palestinians "found" some casings and gave them to the police. In addition, the group that took credit for the killings, "The Committee for Safety on the Roads", was a front-organization for GSS agent-provocateur Avishai Raviv several years ago. Could it be, concluded Elyakim Ha'etzni, writing in YEDIOT ACHARONOT, that those who committed the murders last week did so in order to attribute it to the "settlers" and thus gain support for the call for international observers? In a related item, Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer called upon Minister of Public Security Uzi Landau to increase police presence in Hebron - not in order to protect Jews from the recent heavy Arab gunfire, but in order to "control the Jewish residents." Officials in Landau's office indicated they understand Ben-Eliezer's request as a political one; Ben-Eliezer is running for leader of the Labor Party. ............................ :: SETTLEMENT SITE OF THE WEEK: Otniel <http://www.internadlan.com/amana/otniel/index.htm> Otniel is a religious settlement in the central Har Hebron region of Judea. Otniel was established in 1983. Today the settlement is the largest and most developed settlement in the Har Hebron Region, comprising over 70 families and 500 residents. Otniel also has its own medical clinic, synagogue, mikveh, mini-market, community center (with separate facilities for adults and children), library, playground, sports facilities and swimming pool. ............................ :: US PRESSURING ISRAEL TO START COUNTING: The US is pressing Israel to begin counting seven "quiet" days, and then move quickly into the Mitchell program, not because of any objective change on the ground, but because of US considerations in the Persian Gulf, a diplomatic source close to the prime minister said Thursday. "It could be that the US at this time is less oriented toward what is going to work, but motivated more by a need to deliver something because of political concerns on the Gulf," the official said. The official added that Iraq is at the top of the US's list of foreign policy priorities, and since its policy of "smart sanctions" against Iraq has failed, the US is thinking ahead to the need to rebuild an alliance with the Gulf Sates in the struggle against Saddam Hussein. The US is under pressure from its Arab allies to give something in return, namely to begin the Mitchell plan now. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon seemed to allude to the same reading of the situation when he told a Likud faction meeting in Ariel Thursday that "the United States has their own interests and wants to bring the Arab countries closer in order to increase their activities with Iraq. Should this not trigger a red light?" Zalman Shoval, a foreign policy adviser to Sharon, said that Israel needs to make it clear that although it recognizes the importance of the US building an alliance against Iraq, Israel should not have to pay for it. ............................ :: IT'S TIME FOR MARTYR SUMMER CAMP AGAIN: Islamic Jihad is running four summer camps in Gaza teaching 8-12 year-olds the importance of becoming suicide bombers, Israeli Television, CHANNEL 2, reported. At the "Paradise Camps," children undergo military training and view films about martyrs who have died while killing Israelis. They are taught that to give their lives is to be guaranteed a place in heaven. And to be a suicide bomber is one of the highest forms of martyrdom. "We are teaching the children that suicide bombing is the only thing that make the Israeli people very frightened. Furthermore, we are teaching them that we have the right to do it," said Islamic Jihad member Mohammed el Hattab, one of the teachers on the program. ............................ :: IDF STRIKES IN GAZA: Armed clashes between Israelis and Palestinians have broken out after an Israeli helicopter attacked Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The air strike took place early on Saturday east of the city of Khan Younis. The Israeli army said a workshop making munitions including mortar shells was destroyed. The army spokesman said the attack was in retaliation for the firing of three mortar shells on Friday night at the nearby Jewish settlement of Gadid. ............................ :: ON THE NORTHERN FRONT: Over the last few days, Iran has transferred hundreds of tons of weapons, ammunition and other materials to the Hizb'Allah through Syria, HA'ARETZ reported. The deliveries were airlifted by Antonov 124 transport planes that landed at Damascus International Airport and were transported to storage facilities of the Revolutionary Guards in Lebanon and to the Hizb'Allah. Security experts estimate that some of the equipment will be smuggled to Palestinian terrorist organizations. According to Israeli intelligence sources, Iranian assistance via Hizb'Allah to Palestinian organizations that attack Israel is increasing. In addition to extensive efforts to smuggle equipment, weapons and ammunition to Palestinian groups, Hizb'Allah has also started training Palestinians at bases in the Beka'a Valley in Lebanon. Intelligence also shows that Hizb'Allah maintains direct links with Palestinian terrorist cells operating in the Judea, Samaria, and Gaza, and is cultivating ties with Fatah. Meanwhile, another videotape related to the kidnapping of the three Israeli soldiers in Lebanon - this one of the kidnapping itself - has now been reported to exist. Hizb'Allah's TV station reported last week that the terrorist organization videotaped the October 2000 abduction.
