CONDIT FINDS CRUCIAL DAY FORGETTABLE

By NILES LATHEM

August 2, 2001 -- WASHINGTON - During his last interview with
investigators, Rep. Gary Condit was unable to recall all of his activities
on the day Chandra Levy disappeared, The Post has learned.

Law-enforcement officials said the congressman's fourth grilling by police
and the FBI on Thursday failed to clear up a few lingering questions about
his whereabouts on May 1, the last day police have been able to track the
24-year-old Bureau of Prisons intern.

The officials told The Post that, in the 90-minute session in Condit lawyer
Abbe Lowell's office, the California Democrat was pressed for more details
of his movements that day.

The sources wouldn't reveal what specific questions were asked, but they
said Condit was sometimes stumped and couldn't remember specifics of his
activities.

Investigators also said they are still looking closely at Condit, despite
recent public assertions that he is no longer a focus of their probe,
sources told The Post.

Cops have said repeatedly that the 53-year-old Condit is not a suspect.

Meanwhile, the FBI and police were checking yesterday on an Internet tip
that Levy's body, wrapped in plastic, was buried under a parking lot near
the military base in Fort Lee, Va. But the FBI said last night there were
no plans for a search "at this time."

"If the tip is deemed credible, appropriate investigative steps will be
taken," the Richmond FBI office said in a statement.

D.C. cops said the detailed tip came Tuesday night from the
California-based WeTip.com, which accepts tips and passes them on to
authorities.

Even as authorities try determine whether to follow the latest lead, there
have been signs that investigators aren't totally satisfied with Condit's
alibi for May 1, including the fact that police last Thursday interviewed a
female ABC News reporter.

Condit's time line, initially handed out to the cops and media by his
lawyers, had him meeting the woman for drinks May 1. But the meeting
actually happened May 2, it was later revealed.

The dogged scrutiny continues as pressure seemed to be easing on the
married father of two.

Earlier in the week, police had said he wasn't a central figure and they
were dropping plans to give him a lie-detector test.

Condit's lawyer took off for a 10-day vacation in Europe, while Condit made
plans to return to his home in Ceres, Calif., to be with his shell-shocked
family and decide what to do about his shattered career.

The FBI is expected to take an increasingly active role in the case, and
have assigned the legendary agent Bradley Garrett, who heads the cold-case
squad and recently cracked the 5-year-old missing-person mystery of a woman
who was allegedly kidnapped by her hubby.

Garrett appears to be retracing the steps of police and was seen at Levy's
apartment building and health club yesterday.

The political toll on Condit continued. California colleague, Sen. Dianne
Feinstein, who backed him when the story first made headlines, is now
backing off her support.

"I don't think there's anything he can do to regain his credibility," she
told reporters.

==============

The police have "dropped plans" to give Condit a polygraph? Is someone
pissing on my foot and telling me it's raining?

You can bet your firstborn or your MP3 player, whichever is more important,
that one Abbe Lowell told the police that under absolutely NO circumstances
would his client take a police-administered lie detector test. No way the
fibbies just nonchalantly dropped the issue do they think we are fools?

Which, of course, still has mine own wise self batting a thousand as early
on I said a)Condit would NEVER take a credible lie detector test and b)if
guilty in Levy's disappearance....would NEVER speak publicly. Innocent
people do not behave like this please don't try to sell me a bridge and
tell me they do.

I also note the whisper that though they say publicly that Condit is no
longer the central focus....that he, in fact, is still very much on the
fibbie radar. As well he should be.

Also note how I kept moaning about that fake timeline his deceitful minions
published with the meeting with the ABC reporter all on the wrong date
which was, according to his paid liars, a "clerical mistake". Pissing
directly on my foot and telling me it's raining AGAIN!

Guy's got a real problem with his timeline on May 1...couldn't remember
what he was doing. Yeah right. He was busy murdering and disposing of a
body but of course he can't tell the fibbies this. So he hems and haws and
let me ask you this.....you're an important congress critter under a veil
of suspicion for the disappearance of a young woman. Your timeline on the
day she went missing is all-important and you've got a well-paid (even some
PHANTOM employees who give good blow jobs) staff that lies like a rug when
asked. You're not beating them up to get detail of every minute of that day
in question? Or do you just walk into the fibbie interview with a big
DUH....I can't remember, though you've had, what...over 90 days to gather
the info. You were meeting with constituents? Get them on the horn, have
them sign an affidavit attesting to this. Condit's real good with
affidavits I understand. No wait! The "meeting" is later alleged to have
been a "phone conference"...so sorry about that earlier lie. No problem,
get the phone records.

You wouldn't be walking into that meeting with a minute-by-minute list of
everything you did that day with documentation to prove your assertions?

Or would you go...DUH....I forget what I was doing?

Would you be forgetting whether you and this young woman had intimate
contact during the last meeting? My foot's getting wet from all this
pissing upon it. No wait....it's raining, right? Yellow rain.

That wonderful and honest California senator, Diane Feinstein, is mad...MAD
I tell you, that Condit lied to her. She was mad when Clinton lied as well
and I figure Feinstein's got wet feet too from all the pissing done upon
her fragile feet. Her statement was pre-cursor of what's to come is all.
Condit's allegedly going to have a soul-search with his family during the
August recess. What you wanna bet he and his family decide that the man
should resign from congress....to better "heal"? Natch that shot across the
bow from California's senior senator will have nothing to do with that
decision. Condit's no dummy...if I can read between the lines I bet he can.
By resigning he'll never have to address his constituents because...well
his lawyer told him to clam up. Can't have guilty people talking...they may
say something that'll trip them up.

As an aside...I do believe that Otis Thomas character lied about his
daughter's alleged affair with Condit. And I believe this mostly because
the fibbies have Condit's DNA....what's to stop them from comparing it to
the baby's DNA? In fact, I bet the fibbies threatened to do just this which
is why Mr. Thomas recanted.

I'm waffling about Condit's alleged association with the gay underworld.
This makes good copy but seems a bit far-fetched to me.

And that hardware store clerk.....I think this fellow has his dates all
mixed up. I'm thinking he did make keys for Ms. Levy, but earlier than she
disappeared. Still, it's interesting about the keys and makes me wonder
what or who they were for.

As for her body being shrink-wrapped and buried under a parking lot....what
the hell is this all about? The tip did cause a seasoned investigator to
react immediately so I'm thinking there's something to it but come
on....under a parking lot on a military base? All I can say, if so, there'd
be no doubt in my mind this was a professional job. Somehow I can't see
Condit lugging a body, shrink-wrapping the thing, jumping on a backhoe and
burying it under a layer of asphalt.

The only way they're going to get the spotlight off of Condit is to make
the asshole resign. I predict he won't return to congress after the recess.
Condit's congressional buddies are a bit sick of all of this...witness his
"blue dog" buddy who had to issue a public condemnation lest us peons think
HE was involved in Levy's disappearance. Feinstein's comments are no
accident either. She's the senior senator and she'd be the one telling
Condit he has to go.

If nothing else, consider this a result of the media coverage. If the man
never pays the price for whatever he may have had to do with Ms. Levy's
disappearance, at least he will be disgraced forever.

Hardly a fair trade-off for a human life but it's better than nothing.
