Among the wounded were small children and babies. The names of those murdered are: Michal Raziel, 15, from Ramot; Tehila Maoz, 20, from Jerusalem; Mordecai, 43 and Tzira, 41 Sichsord, from Moshav Talmon and three of their children, Raya, 14, Avraham Yitzhak, 4 and Hemdah, 2; Frida Mendelssohn, 62, from Jerusalem; Zvika Golombag, 26, from Carmiel; Lily Shamilashvili, 33, and her daughter Tamar, 8; Giora Balash, 60, a Brazilian tourist; Judith Lillian Greenbaum, 30, an American tourist from Los Angeles; Yocheved Shoshan, 10, from Har Nof, Jerusalem; Malka Roth, 15, Ramot; and Malka Roth, 16 years old, a resident of Jerusalem. Initially, Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the murders. But later, Hamas took credit. Friday, it was disclosed that the man named by Islamic Jihad was found at his house. The PA/PLO had been given specific details on the Hamas handlers of the Sbarro bomber, so that if Arafat had taken action, the bombing likely would not have taken place. ............................ :: SHARON: "WE ARE EXERCISING OUR SOVEREIGNTY OVER JERUSALEM": While the IDF [Israel Defense Force] engaged in some retaliatory measures Thursday night, the most significant steps taken by the Government of Israel were in the political realm: Israel closed the headquarters of the Palestinian Authority [PA/PLO] in Jerusalem known as the Orient House. Overnight, Police and IDF forces entered the building and unfurled an Israeli flag over the structure in place of the PLO one. All computers, documents, and files in the building were confiscated. In addition, IDF forces took control of the governor's house compound and houses close by, in the Abu Dis neighborhood in East Jerusalem. These houses are mostly used as headquarters of the PA/PLO security services which include: Force 17, the General Intelligence, the Preventive Security, the Military Intelligence, the Political Guidance (responsible for military and political propaganda) and the Palestinian Police. These services are functioning illegally and in contrast to the agreements, since the area was declared a B+ area, with the implementation of the Hebron Accord. Abu Dis is defined as a B+ area, under Israeli security control, and the Oslo accords do not permit the Palestinians to maintain activity by the security services in areas under Israeli security authority. In response, the Palestinian leaders of the Oslo War vowed Saturday to bring the war to Jerusalem. The nations of the world also denounced the move by Israel. The US State Department referred to Israeli's swift response as a "serious political escalation" of the conflict. Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said that the violence jeopardized security across the world. France denounced Israel's seizure of the PLO office as contrary to previous peace agreements with the Palestinians. The United Arab Emirates expressed Arab anger and pessimism, describing Israeli retaliation as "the death of the peace accords" while Jordan said Israel should withdraw is forces from the PLO offices. Egypt also demanded the reopening of Orient House, the PLO's unofficial office in East Jerusalem, condemning the closure as a "screaming violation" of international law. ............................ :: EGYPTIAN ARMED FORCES TO AID ARAFAT: The threat of a wider Middle East conflict is growing as the Egyptian government considers sending its 3rd Armored Army into the Sinai peninsula if Israel moves into Palestinian territories. In recent weeks Egypt has come under increased pressure from the Palestinians to help them. The Sinai option was confirmed by a senior Egyptian security source, who said the Israelis had to be deterred from "destroying" the Palestinian Authority and Yasser Arafat, its leader. Palestinian sources said that last month Arafat reminded Egypt's president, Hosni Mubarak, that the country had an obligation: as a signatory of the Arab League's defense treaty, it had a duty to give military support to any fellow member coming under attack. In a related report, the United States plans to supply naval missile systems to Egypt and other allies in the Middle East. The delivery is part of a $27 million weapons project between Washington and a range of U.S. allies. In addition, the US Department of Defense is considering a request from Egypt to add an additional 100 General Dynamics Land Systems M1A1 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) worth an estimated $590 million to its co-production program plus an additional 100 120mm M256 smooth bore tank guns, 100 0.50 cal (12.7mm) M2 machine guns, 200 7.62 mm M240 machine guns, 12 5.56 mm M16A2 rifles plus other associated spare parts and training equipment. ............................ :: THE PA/PLO REVOLVING DOOR: The PA/PLO claims its Palestinian security forces arrested two key Islamic Jihad members after the Jerusalem bombing. But officials later said that they had information that the two men, members of Islamic Jihad, had been released Saturday night. However, defense sources in Tel Aviv and military sources in the Central Command could not confirm that any terrorist had been arrested. In most of the suicide bombings, Israeli security agents knew the attackers' identities and they were given to the Palestinians beforehand. But the PA/PLO did nothing, and in fact, warned them that Israel was after them. ............................ :: SETTLEMENT SITE OF THE WEEK: Shilo <http://www.shilo.org.il/is.htm> The modern community of Shilo spreads up the hills overlooking Tel Shilo, where over 3,000 years ago the children of Israel gathered to erect the Tabernacle and to divide by lot the Land of Israel into tribal portions [Joshua 18-19]. Shilo today is made up of close to 200 families, of all ages and all backgrounds. ............................ :: HEBRON OBSERVERS AIDED TANZIM: Members of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) have passed sensitive information onto Tanzim members in the city, according to senior IDF officers. The TIPH observers gathered and passed information on IDF troop movements and details on the city's Jewish residents onto Tanzim terrorists, ISRAEL RADIO reported. Lists and photographs detailing troop reinforcements and organization were also reportedly passed on to the Tanzim. PM Sharon said such intelligence information can cause potential damage to Israel and endanger the lives of soldiers in the field. Meanwhile, PA/PLO forces Wednesday evening opened fire on Jews gathering for prayer services at the Machpela Cave in Hebron. No injuries were reported. On the previous weekend, Arabs positioned on Shalhevet Hill in Hebron - with a commanding view of the Avraham Avinu neighborhood - rained sporadic, massive gunfire on the Jewish homes below from Friday night at 11:45 PM, until Sunday morning at 2:00 AM. Israeli forces returned fire. Tanks were ordered to fire on Givat Shalhevet in the early Sunday morning. ............................ :: ALIYAH CONTINUES DESPITE TERRORISM: A group of twenty families moved from France and arrived in Kochav Ha'Shachar, northeast of Jerusalem. The group made aliyah (immigrated) together a few weeks ago and went directly to the small Shomron town. Forty-three new immigrants from Mexico arrived Thursday in Israel, immediately moving into the Jewish community of Kochav Ya'akov, in the Binyamin region. In addition, over 920 more new immigrants arrived this week in Israel. 628 from the CIS, 76 from Ethiopia and the others from France, Belgium, England, South Africa, Holland, Argentina, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, the United States, and Canada. The settlements that absorbed the most olim were: Kochav Ha'Shachar, Hinanit, Eli, Gedid, Beit Yatir, Kochav Ya'akov, Shavei Shomron and the Golan Heights settlements. According to Jewish Agency figures 41,224 new immigrants (32,660 of them from the former Soviet Union [FSU]) have arrived in Israel since the start of the recent violence. Jewish Agency statistics also reveal that in spite of the threat of violence, over 1,000 olim chose to settle in the settlements of Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip (Yesha). "Therefore say, 'Thus says the L-rd G-d, "I shall gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries among which you have been scattered, and I shall give you the land of Israel."'" [Ezekiel 11.17] ............................ :: ANCIENT SYNAGOGUES REVEAL BUSTLING JEWISH LIFE IN GOLAN: Prime Minister Sharon said on Monday that Israeli public relations should emphasize the Jewish historical rights to the Land of Israel. The Prime Minister referred to "impressive archaeological revelations recently made on the Golan Heights" as an example of ammunition for such an Israeli PR campaign. Archeologist Dr. Hayim Ben-David says that Sharon was referring to an ancient synagogue which he and his team recently uncovered in the central Golan, near the Kanaf agricultural community. The large and impressive synagogue, according to Ben-David, is indicative of an economically successful Jewish community during the Talmudic period (following the era of the Second Temple), but he pointed out that "these Jewish communities existed for hundreds of years throughout the Second Temple period and thereafter." The latest revelation is only one of 25 synagogues from the Mishnaic and Talmudic periods unearthed thus far on the Golan Heights. The Golan synagogues constitute a quarter of all synagogues unearthed in archaeological digs throughout Israel. Dr. Ben-David estimates that the Golan was the home of between 20,000 and 40,000 Jews during the periods of the Mishnah and the Talmud, with Gamla as the capital of the region. The archaeological digs have yet to reveal the remains of any significant non-Jewish settlement prior to the period of the Turkish Empire, approximately 400 years ago. ............................ :: LEBANESE CHRISTIANS BEING BOMBED, JAILED: The Christian community in Lebanon is taking another beating, as two homes belonging to former SLA officers were bombed on Tuesday, while some 150 Christians opposed to Syria's military domination of the country have been arrested. The two houses were blown up yesterday as a warning to "collaborators" who fled to Israel not to return to their villages in south Lebanon. [Former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak abandoned the SLA when he hastily withdrew IDF troops from south Lebanon last year.] ............................ :: UN CONTINUES TO MISLEAD ISRAEL: The UN's admitted "misleading" of Israel in its search for three kidnapped IDF soldiers turned into outright obstruction on Tuesday, when the UN put surprisingly strict limits on access to evidence in its custody. The UN last Friday admitted that it had concealed from Israel its possession of three videotapes and 53 other items related to the abduction of three IDF troops by Hizb'Allah last October. When the UN then agreed to allow Israeli authorities to examine all the material in its custody, a team of three IDF experts was sent to New York this week to view them. But the IDF delegation was shocked on Tuesday when the UN said they could only see the video and articles one time. Wednesday, however, a compromise was reached between the Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Yehudah Lankri, and UN representatives, whereby the Israeli experts would view the tapes again, examine the articles from the scene of the kidnapping and be allowed to send other experts to one more viewing, to be arranged for the families of the soldiers. ............................ :: THE OSLO AGREEMENTS: 'THE BIG SCAM': During the past few months, numerous Israeli commentators, columnists, academics, politicians, intellectuals, authors and other opinion makers from across the political spectrum, have written articles regarding their disillusionment with the Palestinians in general, with Yasser Arafat in particular, and with the Oslo process as a whole. Most articles pointed fingers at the Palestinian side, and accused it of deceiving and misleading the Israeli public and government. In a soul-searching article in the Israeli daily MA'ARIV, commentator Amnon Dankner -- who himself was an active member of the peace camp -- claimed that, when examining the facts dating back to 1993, it seems that Israeli leaders and intellectuals were also at fault for misleading the Israeli public. ............................ :: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? About 50 U.S. warplanes struck three air-defense installations in southern Iraq on Friday. This included an air defense control center that connects by fiber-optic cables an anti-aircraft missile site and a long-range radar station. It was at least the second time this week that allied planes had struck Iraqi targets. The distance from Washington, D.C. to Iraq is approximately 6,200 miles. However, the distance from Jerusalem to Ram'Allah is only a few miles. Why, then, is it acceptable for the US, who is not in any danger from the Iraqis, to bomb Iraqi military installations; yet Israel is condemned for acting in self-defense against a sworn enemy whose only goal is the complete destruction of Israel? ............................ :: MEMORABLE QUOTES: "The lessons I absorbed from Panama confirmed all my convictions over the preceding 20 years, since the days of doubt over Vietnam. Have a clear political objective and stick to it. Use all the force necessary and do not apologize for going in big if that is what it takes. Decisive force ends wars quickly and in the long run saves lives." Colin Powell in his autobiography, "My American Journey", page 421. "I've never had an experience like it. It was almost like a little mini pogrom." Sha'i Ben Tekoa interviewing Carol Gould from London about the rising anti-Semitism there. "Abu Amar [Yasir Arafat], I guarantee your safety. Do not fear. We want you to continue leading your people towards the direction of peace." Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer in an interview on ISRAEL TELEVISION CHANNEL ONE. ............................ :: THE MACCABEAN ONLINE: The August 2001 Maccabean-Online is now available at: <http://freeman.io.com/online.htm>.
