Condit to address troubles in home district
By Tom Squitieri
USA TODAY
Rep. Gary Condit plans to face constituents late this month in an effort
to counter hostile hometown newspaper editorials and growing discontent in
his California district. Condit has been hit with scathing editorials in
three key California newspapers calling on him to resign because of his
behavior and alleged lack of candor regarding his relationship with missing
former federal intern Chandra Levy.
Condit returned to California Aug. 3 but has not been seen publicly since.
His staff said he has gone on retreat with his two adult children. He is
not expected to make any public appearances before Aug. 25. The nature of
his first appearances has not been determined.
Levy, 24 and single, disappeared on or after May 1. For eeks, Condit, 53
and married, said he was just good friends with Levy. But on July 6, in
his third interview with Washington police, Condit acknowledged an affair
with her.
Police have said Condit might have hindered their search for Levy by not
disclosing their relationship sooner. Two other women have said Condit or
his staff tried to discourage them from telling authorities about their own
affairs with the Democrat. That has led federal prosecutors to investigate
whether Condit or a staff member obstructed justice in the Levy
investigation.
Sunday, The Modesto Bee, the largest newspaper in Condit's district, called
on him to resign. A similar editorial appeared in The Fresno Bee, a sister
newspaper. Wednesday, the Ceres Courier, Condit's hometown newspaper,
asked him to resign.
"For 15 weeks, Condit has put his own interests ahead of the efforts to
find Levy. His self-absorption has been a lapse not only of judgment but
of human decency," The Modesto Bee wrote. "With Levy's life at stake,
Condit knowingly hindered - if not obstructed - the police investigation
into her disappearance, letting the trail go cold."
In a written statement, Condit said the Bee's editorial was "terribly
unfair and disappointing" in calling on him to resign before the
investigation into Levy's disappearance is concluded and "then hearing what
I have to say."
"It is sad that the Bee did not appreciate my desire to talk and spend some
time with my wife and children before I sit down to any public interview,"
he said. "I am hopeful that my neighbors and constituents will be more
understanding of the complexities of this case."
In response to the Ceres Courier's call for his resignation, a spokesman
for Condit noted that the Ceres Courier's publisher is a longtime partisan
foe of Congressman Condit and that the paper has opposed him for nearly a
decade.
Both Bee editorials recommended that Condit step down because he has
violated the public's trust.
"We've been giving him the benefit of the doubt," Mark Vasche, executive
editor at The Modesto Bee, told the Associated Press. "Just being upfront
and honest with the people who time and time again placed their trust in
him. We just came to the conclusion that he violated that trust."
The Fresno Bee said, "Even with a young woman's life at stake, Condit chose
to protect his political career rather than help find a woman he claimed to
be a friend. When decency was called for, Condit failed."
