�Coloring the Sky�
[JERUSALEM] Thursday, August 23 � At precisely 4:30 PM, the skies over
parts of Arab Jerusalem � the Old City, Sheikh Jarrah, Wadi El Joz and
Beit Hanina � as well as Ramallah, Bir Zeit and other parts of the West
Bank and Gaza will be filled with the colors of the Palestinian flag �
red, green, black and white � as Palestinian youth fly kites and release
balloons in a non-violent, peaceful protest against Israeli occupation
and aggression.
Since the illegal occupation of Orient House and the removal of the
Palestinian flag from its roof, the Palestinian flag has been
confiscated at demonstrations while those holding it have been beaten
and jailed. The flag represents the Palestinian people and its removal
and confiscation by Israel is akin to erasing the Palestinian people
from Jerusalem. With the latest occupation of Palestinian offices,
institutions and homes in Jerusalem and Abu Dis, as well as the ongoing
home demolitions, there can be no doubt that Israel is pursuing a policy
of erasure.
Palestinians have been asked to participate in this protest during radio
and television spots broadcast on Palestinian radio and television.
Participation will include the flying of kites, launching of balloons in
the colors of the flag, flying the flag from Palestinian homes and
people wearing the colors of the flag. This is a statement to the
Israelis and to the world by Palestinians and Jerusalemites, �We are
here, we will be here. Al-Quds is Palestinian also!�
Youth are expected to gather in central areas in Ramallah and Bir Zeit,
while in Jerusalem, they will gather at a number of meeting points,
including the Sheikh Jarrah playground. Balloons will be dispersed
throughout the Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem, and will be sent to fly
over Orient House.
