-Caveat Lector- [Note: This article makes mention of another article published in The Massachusetts News - "Kids Get Graphic Instruction In Homosexual Sex". I have had that article for some time now but it was simply to graphic, too disgusting, to send to this list (yes, my standards will dictate what is and is not acceptable for this list as some will criticize my decision not to forward the article), and to think that the material that was too horrid to send to the list is being taught to 14 year old school children. It is notable that this woman regained her position due to the fact, in part, that her supervisors KNEW what they were doing, and did not prevent it. As WorldNetDaily reported, two state employees in the HIV division of the Department of Education and an HIV consultant with the Department of Public Health led a "Teach Out" sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN. These instructors travel to schools throughout Massachusetts conducting HIV-prevention workshops for teens. Scott Whiteman, with the Massachusetts-based Parents Rights Coalition, attended several of the workshops and says he was shocked to learn what state employees were teaching children. According to Whiteman, in one "Teach Out" workshop entitled, "What They Didn't Tell You About Queer Sex & Sexuality in Health Class: A Workshop For Youth Only, Ages 14-21," the three instructors encouraged teens to openly discuss various homosexual sex acts in the most explicit manner. Also according to Whiteman, the entire session ran 55 minutes before there was any mention of condoms or "safer sex." When condoms were discussed, the teachers pointed out that teens could make an "informed decision" not to use condoms. Whiteman secretly audio-taped the workshop and then co-wrote a detailed and explicit article, "Kids Get Graphic Instruction In Homosexual Sex," in The Massachusetts News. WorldNetDaily reported that amid the firestorm which erupted over the tape recording, Margot Abels, one of the three instructors conducting the workshop, filed a lawsuit. The seven-year employee of the state's education department claimed her civil rights were violated by Whiteman and by Education Commissioner David Driscoll, who subsequently fired her. The Service Employees International Union challenged Abels' dismissal and took the case to arbitration. On Tuesday, according to the Boston Globe, arbitrator Marc Greenbaum ruled that the department was wrong to fire Margot Abels. Greenbaum backed Abels' assertion that her presentation was ''authorized by her superiors, and her conduct, while controversial, did not violate then-established department guidelines and policies.'' Abels will receive back wages from the date she was fired, May 19, 2000. Abels is reportedly ''thrilled'' by the decision, but doesn't plan to return to the department. ''I'm still in shock, but I do feel vindicated,'' she said. ''I do believe what the department did was wrong and that the arbitrator was right on in his decision.'' Brian Camenker, president of the Parents Rights Coalition, reportedly agrees with the arbitrator's decision - to a point. ''No question about it: Her supervisors knew what was going on and encouraged her to do it,'' he said. ''But this woman should not continue to be paid by the state to have contact with vulnerable children.'' In his ruling Greenbaum hinted that Education Commissioner Driscoll's decision to fire Abels was the result of political pressure, comparing him to ''a soldier in the middle of a live fire exercise,'' reports the Boston Globe. Driscoll stands by his decision, according to the Boston Herald, saying, "One of the major reasons we lost is we did not have a clear policy in place. We now have such a policy, which states that our staff should be dealing with the significant adults in kids' lives on sensitive issues of sexuality.
