-Caveat Lector- Israel Upset by Finland Minister http://www.guardian.co.uk/breakingnews/International/0,3561,1139247,00.html Thursday August 30, 2001 8:50 pm HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - Recent published comments by Finland's foreign minister comparing Israel's crackdown on Palestinians to policies carried out by Nazis are ``an outburst of personal animosity,'' Israel's ambassador said Thursday. ``We are used to hearing these views from our opponents, and I refuse to believe this is the official Finnish policy,'' Miryam Shomrat told The Associated Press. ``I regard it as a departure from the traditionally balanced view of Finland.'' In a magazine article last week, Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja was quoted as saying Israel's intent in its clashes with Palestinians is ``to suppress, humiliate, subdue and impoverish the Palestinians.'' Suomen Kuvalehti magazine on Aug. 24 further quoted Tuomioja as saying: ``It is quite shocking that they (the Jews) should continue toward the Palestinians policies similar to which they were victims of in the 1930s.'' >From Israel, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said Tuomioja's statement is ``based on a total lack of knowledge.... The statement is shocking and outrageous, not only to every Israeli and every Jew, but also to every enlightened person in the world.'' Avner Shalev, director of the government's Holocaust memorial and research center also protested sharply. ``This is incitement to violence against the Jewish people. The Nazis carried out unprecedented genocide, trying to kill every Jew in Europe,'' Shalev said. ``Here we are dealing with a political conflict between two peoples over the same territory.''
