The high-level group of U.S. officials toured the southern region of the country, where U.S. Special Forces have trained Colombian army units in combating the drug trade and where aerial drug eradication operations are based. Much of the $1.3 billion in U.S. aid to Colombia is to support the anti-drug effort. According to Colombian authorities, more than 278,000 acres of fields where narcotic-producing plants are grown and 411 laboratories have been destroyed. Yet, statistics from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy show that more drugs are being seized in the United States, drug consumption remains high and Colombia continues to be the largest supplier of cocaine and heroine. ########################################## New federal force to battle drugs in E. "People who are dealing drugs are also frequently involved in money laundering and firearms," said Selby Smith, newly named regional drug boss for the Drug Enforcement Administration. The new task force includes DEA agents working with agents from the FBI, IRS, U.S. Customs and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The task force is housed in downtown Spokane. "The purpose of this new task force is to come at drug organizations at every level of illegal criminal conduct -- drugs, guns, money laundering, tax evasion," Smith said. The task force's region includes 300 miles of the U.S.-Canada border, where smuggling of a potent form of marijuana known as "B.C. Bud" continues to flourish. The task force also is responsible for federal drug investigations throughout the Idaho Panhandle, from Lewiston to the Canadian border. Methamphetamine production and distribution is the No. 1 drug problem in the region, Smith said. Most large quantities of meth being sold in the Spokane area are coming from dealers with ties to the illegal immigrant community in Yakima, Smith said. ###################################### Ex-police officer admits protecting drug delivery SAN ANTONIO http://web.star-telegram.com/content/fortworth/2001/08/30/state/fw010402-083 0-XB005-4.htm A former Central Texas police officer who was arrested along with seven other law officers in a federal drug sting admitted Tuesday that he plotted to protect a cocaine delivery. Manuel Cedillo Jr. pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Edward C. Prado to charges of conspiring to distribute and possess cocaine. Cedillo's plea deal capped his prison sentence at five years and 10 months. It is the fourth plea agreement in the FBI sting that ended on March 22 with the arrest of eight San Antonio police officers, two Bexar County law-enforcement officers and two civilians. As part of the plea bargain, the prosecution could call Cedillo to testify against other defendants. According to court documents, Cedillo admitted he accompanied another police officer to a local hotel to meet a man known as "Ricardo," who actually was an undercover agent posing as a midlevel cocaine trafficker.
