Little kid killed by shark attack but of little consequence for all
remains open. The child was by a "sandbar" in four feet of water....in
Florida schools of sharks infesting water and little 8 year old lost an
arm and still in coma - but oh well, just one little kid and the matter
of the black man who lost a leg?

What do you think this is all about - what drives these sharks suddenly
in by droves an underground seabase, or what......

This is story on web about sandbars and sharks - and the 10 year old was
not too far off shore in 4 feet of water by a sandbar but then, well you
would not want to hurt the tourist season...shhhhhhhh.

Well seems America is rapidly becoming a third world banana boat country
who does not see fit to warn parents of infested shark waters?

Note Life Guards - tell me aren't they trained to be on look-out and
do they not know of the habits of sharks?

But of little or no consequence - the show must go on - money, money,
money.......

How, When, & Where Sharks Attack

Worldwide there are probably 70-100 shark attacks annually resulting in
about 5-15 deaths.

We say "probably" because not all shark attacks are reported; our
information from Third World countries is especially poor, and in other
areas efforts are sometimes made to keep attack quiet for fear of bad
publicity.

Historically the death rate was much higher than today, but the advent
of readily available emergency services and improved medical treatment
has greatly reduced the chances of mortality. Actual numbers of shark
attacks certainly are going up each year because of increasing numbers
of bathers in the water, but there is no indication that there is any
change in the per capita rate of attack.

Most attacks occur in nearshore waters, typically inshore of a sandbar
or between sandbars where sharks feed and can become trapped at low
tide.

Areas with steep dropoffs are also likely attack sites. Sharks
congregate there because their natural food items also congregate in
these areas.

10-year-old dies after shark attack
Suffered severe blood loss after bites on thigh, leg; officials keep
beach openSeptember 2 =97 A family is in mourning after their son was
fatally attacked by a shark. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell has details.
NBC NEWS AND WIRE REPORTS
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Sept. 2 =97 =A0A 10-year-old boy died early Sunday
from wounds he suffered after being bitten in the leg by a shark while
standing on a sandbar just off Virginia's coast. It was the latest in a
string of shark attacks on the East Coast this summer, but Virginia
Beach officials said they would not close their beaches because no other
sharks were spotted.

=A0 =A0 =A0 The boy did not lose his leg, but the main artery in his
thigh was severed, resulting in significant blood loss.

=A0DAVID PELTIER, from Richmond, was standing on a sandbar 50 feet from
shore in about 4 feet of water at about 6 p.m. when a shark bit the boy,
Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf told a news conference Sunday. The
attack at Sandbridge Beach, a remote coastal community just south of
Virginia Beach, was the first known shark attack in the area in 30
years.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0David was bitten on his left leg and thigh by an 8-foot
shark, said Ed Brazle, division chief for the city's Emergency Medical
Services.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0The boy's father, Richard Peltier, was surfing nearby and
hit the shark on the head and freed his son, Brazle said. Richard
Peltier then carried his son ashore, where witnesses and lifeguards
administered first aid. The boy's two brothers, who also had their
surfboards in the water, cried hysterically, witnesses said.

ARTERY SEVERED
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0The boy did not lose his leg, but the main artery in his
thigh was severed, resulting in significant blood loss, a spokesperson
for Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk said early
Sunday.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0He was first hospitalized at Sentara Virginia Beach
General Hospital following the attack, then transferred to the trauma
unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and around 10:15 p.m. was
taken to Children's Hospital, where he died at 3:45 ET.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Richard Peltier was treated for a hand injury that
occurred during the rescue.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Sandbridge was closed Saturday after the attack but
Virginia Beach officials reopened it Sunday morning. More than 40 EMS
divers and a Jet Ski patrolled the waters, said Bruce Edwards, director
of the city's Emergency Medical Services.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Scientists with the city's Virginia Marine Science Museum
flew over the beaches in a police helicopter but didn't spot any sharks.

=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0"Since there were no sightings of a shark, and since this
is an extremely rare event ... we decided that it was safe and
reasonable to keep the beaches open," said Edwards.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0But beachgoers were wary.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0"I'd rather give the shark a little time to get further
down the coast," said Debbie Morris, 39, of Virginia Beach, who refused
to allow her 11-year-old daughter into the water.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0The Peltier family said they did not want to be
interviewed and asked that the media and others respect their privacy
while they grieved the loss of their son. The family also requested that
no other medical information be released by the hospital.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0They also said they deeply appreciated the expressions of
concern, sympathy and support they have received from the community, and
asked that prayers on their behalf continue.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0"I speak for the entire city of Virginia Beach when I say
how terribly saddened I am by this horrible accident," Mayor Oberndorf
said Saturday.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0
STRING OF ATTACKS
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0The attack was the latest in a spate of highly publicized
shark attacks this year.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0Eight-year-old Jessie Arbogast survived after a shark
tore off his arm as he swam off Pensacola, Florida, in July. Prompt
medical attention on the beach was credited with saving his life and his
severed arm was reattached in surgery, although he remains in guarded
condition.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0The International Shark Attack File at the University of
Florida said only one death from a shark attack, in Brazil, had been
reported so far this year, compared to an average of eight per year in
recent years.
=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0As of last week, 48 attacks had been reported worldwide,
with 37 of those reported in the United States and 28 of those in
Florida. That compares to 84 recorded worldwide last year, including 53
in the United States and 37 of those in Florida.
