-Caveat Lector-
>The U.S. Army has calculated that the average woman recruit has 59 percent
>of the upper body strength of her average male counterpart and 72 percent
>in the lower body.
Of course most men are generally stronger than most women (altho women
have consistently surpassed men in being able to withstand greater
amounts of pain for longer periods of time)...but no mention is made of
the continued relevance of purely manual strength in the increasingly
mechanized and computerized armed forces....
>Mr. Van Creveld found that anecdotal evidence of women fighting in
>historical conflicts was unreliable. Stories of female warriors, Amazons,
>were myths, he said, adding: "There is no more reason to believe they ever
>existed any more than Barbarella or Wonder Woman did."
Bullshit. One doesn't have to go by myths and legends alone;
archeological evidence shows that in certain cultures women fought
alongside the men of their tribe...
Recent archeological finds in the permafrost of the steppes of southern
Russia show that there was a culture there circa 4000-2000 BCE that had
tamed the horse and whose culture revolved around the horse...they were
extremely adept horse riders and apparently were the first to develop the
bit, bridle, and stirrup...
Two digs have unearthed the remains of women who were buried with great
honor, even having horses killed and buried with them. Part of the
funerary goods included armor, shields, bows and arrows, and lances. In
one dig the cloth was so well preserved that the designs woven into the
cloth were quite visible, and one blanket depicted a battle which showed
both men and women of this tribe taking part in it.
Jewelry and metalwork of these people (including quite fine horse
rainment) also show women warriors...
Recently a grave was found in South America of an Incan grave which had
the skeleton of a woman buried with armor and mace; heiroglyphs found in
and near the grave suggest that this woman was considered a great
warrior, but no other information regarding who she was has been found,
and the find is considered 'a great mystery'...
Then there are those accounts of the Roman generals who invaded England,
of the fierceness of the Celtic and blue-painted Picts, especially how
fiercely the women of both races fought. The Romans seemed to be
particularly offended that women fought equally with men...
>He witnessed women training for the Israeli army in scenes he described as
>bordering on farce. When men and women recruits set out on runs, the men
>were soon out of sight.
Well of course! Men tend to be taller, and have longer legs. Just look
at the stats for long distance running or track and field in civilian
sports, and women athletes' times always lag behind the men....
But let's compare ENDURANCE records; while those men may sprint like a
jackrabbit at the beginning a leave the women behind, let's see who is in
front of who after an endurance run of a few hours....
>During stretcher drills, women struggled to cope
>with the weight of their male colleagues.
Strange....women nurses in civilian life have to do it all the time...
>Women in front-line units increased costs because separate facilities were
>needed for a relatively small number of recruits.
Well jeez, and I guess y'gotta issue them khaki tampons and camoflage
sanitary napkins, too....
>Active-duty and former army officers have echoed the book's findings. Col.
>Mike Vickery, who commanded the 14th/20th Hussars during the Gulf War, told
>the Sunday Telegraph: "Being shut down in a tank for hours on end in combat
>could be very difficult with women in a unit. It can mean having to urinate
>in a bottle, for example.
As opposed to....what? Just pissing at will wherever he wants to in the
tank? Or do the male soldiers take a whizz out the window?
Having to pee into a bottle sounds like something that should be SOP
anyway.... ;-)
>An artillery commander added: "So far, women have proved excellent in
>training, but they haven't been tested in war."
You can say that about ANY recruit, male or female...
