Veneman responded to Congressman Mark Green's (R-Wis.) concerns about animal terrorism in the United State during the upcoming World Dairy Expo in Wisconsin, reports Wisconsin Ag Connection. In a letter to Green this week, Veneman said USDA and the federal government will do everything possible to make sure the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) does not spread FMD. Monitoring PETA Veneman's comments were in response to Green's letter dated June 5, in which Green expressed his frustration with comments from PETA activist Bruce Friedrich. Friedrich said "the introduction of FMD in the U.S. would be something we would welcome." Earlier this summer, Friedrich threatened to tour Europe and the United Kingdom, and then attend World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis., to spread FMD. "What this guy has suggested is absolute insanity," Green stated in his June 5 letter to Veneman. "We have to take every precaution to make sure his sick foot-and-mouth fantasy never becomes reality." Veneman's letter stated that PETA is being closely watched and that the FMD threat is being taken seriously, noted Wisconsin Ag Connection.
