-Caveat Lector- Subj: Who Paid for the Fireworks Extravaganza for Less than 150 People? Date: 9/7/01 9:11:43 PM Central Daylight Time From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (BuzzFlash.com) FROM BUZZFLASH.COM The unemployment rate surged to a new recent high, as the economy continued to go down the tubes. But at the White House, taxpayers footed the bill for a state banquet reminiscent of Versailles. Then there's the private fireworks show for fewer than 150 people estimated to cost around $200,000. Who paid for that? As of Friday, the White House continued to stonewall. It seems to be the standard operating procedure for the Bush White House. Let the taxpayers fund George's vacations and excesses, let the economy go down the tubes, but don't let the people know what the bill is. WASHINGTON White House aides apologized for stunning their neighbors Wednesday night with deafening late-night fireworks honoring Mexico President Vicente Fox's state visit. The 15-minute display by Zambelli Fireworks of New Castle, Pa., burst into the sky shortly after 11 p.m., surprising Washingtonians, who had been given little warning and who flooded the White House switchboard with alarmed calls. "We do sincerely apologize," said Ashleigh Adams, spokeswoman for First Lady Laura Bush. Adams said the display was paid for by the State Department because it was tied to a diplomatic function — and she referred questions about its cost to the department. "Oh, I was told that it was the White House," a State Department press official said. Another agency official said only the White House could comment on a state dinner. George Zambelli of the fireworks company also declined to reveal what his company was paid. Timothy J.
