Terrorists might have entered U.S. on N.S. ferry
Ticket stubs seized from rental cars

Wednesday, September 12, 2001
U.S. authorities are being tight-lipped about a possible Canadian connection
to attacks on New York and Washington Tuesday.

They are said to be investigating the possibility that at least two of the
hijackers in the attack on the World Trade Centre came from our side of the
border.

There's speculation they took a ferry from Yarmouth, N.S. into Maine, then
flew from Portland to Boston.

It was at Logan airport that they would have boarded one of the planes that
smashed into the World Trade Center in New York.

A car believed to belong to the hijackers was confiscated in Boston. It
contained an Arabic language flight manual and a number of ticket stubs,
including two for the ferry from Yarmouth to Maine.

WCVB-TV, quoting an anonymous source, reported that the suspects purchased
one-way tickets with cash, arrived late and were Middle Eastern -- red flags
for security personnel.

Prime Minister Chretien was reluctant to talk about the investigation this
afternoon, but said police had no new information.

He said right now "security people are looking to find out who these people
are and where they were coming from.''

The prime minister said the government has no indication they used Canada to
get into the U.S. But he concedes "it is a possibility.''

A senior government official said the RCMP are co-ordinating the massive
probe.

The Boston Globe reported that one suspect's luggage contained a copy of the
Quran, an instructional video on flying commercial airliners and a fuel
consumption calculator.

Officials caution the information, including raw intelligence, is still
developing and they won't say if they've asked Canadian authorities for help.

FBI Special Agent Charles Prouty would not confirm the report at a morning
briefing.

In Portland, a company which sells tickets for a ferry run between Portland
and Yarmouth, N.S., gave passenger lists to U.S. officials.

Mitch Maclean, president of the company that sells tickets for Scotia Prince
Ferries, said Wednesday that he's providing information on who was aboard the
ferry to the U.S. Customs agency.

"We're doing a list for U.S. customs for everybody who has travelled for the
past 10 days,'' he said.''

He said the company has no idea if the suspects in the terrorist attacks were
aboard the Scotia Princess. "There are up to 600 people a day coming aboard
in a pretty fast process every day,'' he said.

MacLean said security has been tightened at the terminal since the attacks.
"The uncertainty of who caused what has everybody being very cautious.''

Rick Wilson, the manager of the Bay Ferries terminal where passengers buy
tickets, said his staff haven't noticed anything unusual in the last two
weeks.

The company checks passports and immigration documents but the passengers
clear U.S. customs when they arrive in Portland.

Wilson said the passenger lists were handed over early Wednesday morning.

"If the photos (of suspects) were ever supplied my staff may or may not be
able to pick anything out,'' he said. "We're anticipating lots of changes.
We've tightened security.''

U.S. attorney Jim Farmer says any statements might jeopardize future
prosecutions.

The FBI is also developing intelligence linking the suspected attackers to a
band of Canadian sympathizers of Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden.

Some are thought to be of Algerian origin, and are suspected of planning an
unsuccessful terrorist attack on U.S. soil during the millennium
celebrations.
