1941.
No not the year.....the movie.
You know with John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Robert Stack.
It was a comedy based on the war hysteria in the U.S.
especially California immediately after Pearl Harbor.
The movie wasn't much of an exaggeration.
In the first few months after Pearl Harbor, they were
having air raid drills all over the U.S.
Places like Kansas City and Indianapolis
were having "blackout drills"....to keep the Japs
and Germans from bombing them. There was no real
threat of that of course...but it was part of the
psychological war scare/frenzy whipped up on the
home front.
In the news today, there was a bunch of idiotic
stuff like this.
At Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, base
employees were forced to sit waiting in their cars for
over 4 hours to enter the base gates.
Every vehicle was being searched for .....whatever.
Military Police, Bomb sniffing dogs....the works.
Lackland is where Air Force recruits go through
basic training...no bombers or fighter planes here.
The Air Force must be afraid that Arab terrorist
are going to blow up the barracks, or the
parade grounds...or the base chapel...or the
bowling alley...or maybe the base barber shop.
Then there was this classic case of government
bureaucratic stupidthink: In response to yesterday's
terrorist attacks, bold new regulations were
announced. To prevent any such future attacks,
the FAA is banning plastic knives from all airports
and airliners. If you eat at an airport restaurant,
you'd better not order a steak....or even a waffle.
You're gonna have to tear it apart with your bare
hands. And no more dropping off or picking up
people at the curb in front of the airport...and
no more checking your luggage at the curb.
Nope...no vehicles allowed within 300 feet of
the Terminal. (Will it be raining next time you
make that walk? Oh yes!)
It should be more than obvious that none of these
new "security measures" would have prevented what
happened yesterday. And it won't prevent any
future hijackings. No...it's the bureaucratic
stupidthink way of proving to us they are doing
something to protect us. Yep they are taking
quick action. Never mind that it's senseless.
It reminds me of my dogs.
Every time I pull into the driveway,
the dogs go running around the yard
barking loudly.
They are showing me they are fierce watchdogs
who have been guarding the property while I was away.
After they bark for 20 or 30 seconds they
trot over waging their tails for a pat on
the head.
Sleep soundly America, your government stands guard
tonight. They are taking swift and effective
action to protect you.
Or at least they are barking.
