It could very likely be even higher; remember that the twin towers
normally had 40,000 to 50,000 workers and up to 90,000 visitors on a
typical weekday...
It may have been too early for a large visitor contigent to have been
there when the planes hit...but most of the businesses in the towers were
financial in nature, and their workdays usually start between 8 and
8:30am. So there were probably at least 30,000 workers already at their
desks by the time the first plane hit shortly before 9, and another
10,000 or so either in close proximity on the streets, in the subway
below, or riding the elevators up to their offices.
That is just for the twin towers; the same situation would have existed
for the surrounding office buildings...which in total probably had at
least 30,000 or more workers...
It's heartbreaking watching the local NYC news...literally thousands of
next-of-kin and friends of the missing are wandering the streets of
Manhattan with pictures of their missing loved ones, going from one area
to another trying to find them or anyone who may have seen them...
You know that all these people are dead, but these desperate friends and
family are clinging to any straws, hoping against hope that the person
they are looking for may be just one of the 'miracle ones'...
These posters of the missing are being plastered all over -- one of our
local CT news outlet sent a crew down to the city, and they showed that
in a short time, their news van had been plastered with these posters of
the missing...the people looking for them will put these posters on such
vehicles, because they know it will travel throughout the city and get
down closer to 'ground zero' than they can get...
One man looking for a missing relative said they had evidence the missing
man may still be alive, because when they checked their home voicemail
this morning, one of the calls was from the missing relative, gasping
something about it being dark and it being difficult to breath, and
hearing others calling for help in the distance, before being cut off...
There's rain moving into the area tonight...while it may cause problems
by adding additional weight to the wreckage, they said that for some
reason rescue dogs can detect human scents better when the wreckage is
wet...so perhaps we'll hear of some more rescues overnight...
