You know, I'm far from being a fan of the Shrub, but on this matter I'm
seething over the criticism being directed at him for following what has
been policy for almost half a century....
Yes, policy people....Bush did EXACTLY WHAT HAS BEEN SET UP TO DO WHEN
THE NATION'S CAPITOL IS UNDER ATTACH -- and Tuesday morning it was.
There was credible reports that the White House, the Capitol, and Air
Force One itself were targets, and perhaps even Camp David.
Since the days when we shook nuclear sabers at the USSR, the accepted SOP
for that situation dictated that the President -- the Commander in Chief
of the U.S. Armed Forces -- would be immediately hustled aboard Air Force
One which would then zigzag the skies of North America, operating under
radar invisibility...the President could stay aloft for days if need be,
with inflight refueling, and would only land when the situation
stabilized...
Suppose he HAD headed back to DC immediately, and suppose one of those
hijacked planes either destroyed Air Force One inflight or crashed into
the White House when Bush was there and killed him? And perhaps
killed a goodly number of his Cabinet? Perhaps even the Vice
President...
And what if the plane that went into the Pentagon had successfully
crashed into the Capitol, as originally planned?
Well, doh! Suddenly we don't have a government...
Anyone who says the president -- ANY president -- should have immediately
returned to the White House under such circumstances is an idiot.
