Scope of World Trade Center disaster unfathomable

NEW YORK, Sept. 14 - Though the scope of the World Trade Center
disaster cannot yet be measured, even early indications of the
number of people involved and the Herculean effort of coping with
it are almost beyond imagination.
THERE ARE 1,500 NATIONAL Guardsmen at work in Manhattan,
enough to field 26 pro football teams. Nearly 5,000 people are
missing - more than the entire undergraduate student body at
Princeton University.
Insurance payouts are being estimated to total $5
billion to $25 billion. The low end figure would be enough to pay
for 125 presidential inaugurations.
How to help
Blood and platelet donors will be needed over the next
several weeks to help replenish the nation's supply. Call the Red
Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or America's Blood Centers at
1-888-BLOOD-88 to schedule an appointment.
To donate money to the Red Cross for assisting victims of the
attacks, call 1-800-HELP-NOW.
The United Way of New York and The New York Community Trust have
established a fund to help the victims of Tuesday's attacks and
their families. Anyone wishing to contribute may call (212)
251-4035.
Salvation Army, cash donations: 1-800-SAL-ARMY
A typical New York American Red Cross office took 2,500 calls from
volunteers during the 12 hours following Tuesday's collapse of the
twin towers. That's 78 times the normal call load. The Red Cross
posted a message on its Web site saying it had all the help it
could handle.
By Thursday, the organization had served 15,000 meals
and 50,000 snacks to rescue workers and New Yorkers in need.
About 500 mental health professionals were posted
around the city to help people overcome with grief.
An estimated 1.5 million people donated blood the first
day, supplying enough to fill seven backyard swimming pools.
Although the official number missing was under 5,000,
the city had 30,000 body bags available. That's as many as were
used to bring home Army personnel killed in battle during the
Vietnam War.
While some 350 firefighters were among the missing or
dead, it was impossible to say how many of their brethren were
involved in the rescue mission.
More than 3,000 tons of debris had been removed by
Thursday - enough to fill 160 Mack trucks. The concrete yet to be
removed is enough to pave over Disneyland.
