-Caveat Lector-
I think the key to this scenario from 1895 is in the genealogy of Teddy's
friend and primary supporter, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, who was a
descendant of the Cabot shipping family of Bristol, England, previously of
the Caboto family of Genoa, who started the prototype of contracting with
the British government to explore and exploit newly discovered "foreign"
lands to enrich the Crown's treasury.
This prototype can be traced through American history through the Cabot line
to the Kennedy assassination. It's also very interesting that the National
Technology Transfer Center, located near the Cabot Corporation headquarters
in West Virginia, until recently had a home page of
http://iridium.nttc.edu/gov/other/tech.html
It must have been one of the few users of the Iridium satellites launched
with investments worldwide, including a large investment by the brother of
Osama bin Laden, who, incidentally, had his own satellite phone.
Notice that the Cabot Industrial Trust and Cabot Microelectronics were
investors in the Iridium communications syndicate, along with the Saudi
Binladin companies. Also that the man who put together the plan to steal
the assets and intellectual property of the debt-ridden Iridium LLC and buy
it out from a consortium of investors including Binladin, is Dan Colussy,
former CEO of Pan Am Airlines, which went bankrupt in 1988 after the bombing
of Pan Am 103-- which conspiracy theorists allege was bombed over a drug
turf war. Pan Am had been founded by Juan Trippe, whose family had been
"old world" merchant shippers in the Far East. (opium ????) Trippe hired
Lindbergh as a consultant, or possibly to help raise funds for the airline,
since the famous pilot was married to the daughter of Dwight Whitney Morrow,
the lawyer who worked for J.P. Morgan interests, so involved in financing
for South America and the Far East.
What's interesting is how quickly the destruction of the WTC has increased
the fortune and prospects of the new Iridium.

Bin Laden has the possibility to be much more well-informed than the average
terrorist about the possibilities of cellular communication -- his brother,
Sheikh Hasan bin Laden, was director of Irridium LLC, a company which in
late 1998 developed a global cellular phone network based on 66 low
earth-orbit communications satellites, controlled by 17.5 million lines of
computer code. The Saudi Bin Laden Group, the family's investment arm, had
money in the company that used Chinese Long March rockets to launch its
satellites into orbit.

The history of Binladin began in 1931 when Mohammed Binladin founded the
company. From its humble beginnings as a general contractor, the company has
grown and prospered in parallel with the growth and prosperity of the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Over the years the company has been entrusted with
many major construction projects, projects that helped the Kingdom to
develop its resources and expand its infrastructure.
Under the leadership of the late Salem M. Binladin, the company diversified
into other areas and became an international conglomerate with interests
ranging from its traditional construction business through, for example,
industrial and power projects, petroleum, chemicals and mining,
telecommunications, operations and maintenance, manufacturing and trading,
to satellite communications.
In 1989, as part of the natural progression in the growth of the company,
various autonomous divisions were created under the umbrella of the Saudi
Binladin Group (SBG). Although each division has its own industry focus, all
share the same mission -

Attacks place satellite-based phones in demand
PHOENIX (AP) Communication difficulties in the wake of the Washington and
New York City terrorist attacks have increased demand for a satellite-based
telephone system, its company says. "Our traffic went up significantly
(Tuesday) and probably will continue that way until the networks are
restored," D. D'Ambrosio of Iridium Satellite LLC told The Arizona Republic
on Wednesday.
The Leesburg, Va., company was formed last year to buy out Motorola Inc.'s
failed $5 billion system that was developed and partially was headquartered
in suburban Chandler and Tempe.
The current company maintains one of its three global "gateways" in Tempe,
and it relies on Motorola's Scottsdale-based Integrated Information Systems
Group to service its government users.
Thousands of U.S. Department of Defense employees at the Pentagon and
worldwide have been using their Iridium phones "very, very heavily" to
connect with each other, Iridium Communications Director Walt Rossbach told
the Republic.
The newspaper also said that such news organizations as CNN and such
humanitarian groups as the American Red Cross have turned to Iridium phones
to communicate from the disaster scenes since terrorists flew planes into
New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Iridium's ability to bypass cellphone towers and land-based telephone lines
has helped as rescuers and others deal with the aftermath at the crash sites
and elsewhere.
Cellphone service in lower Manhattan failed when the towers that transmit
signals came crashing down along with the World Trade Center buildings. Land
lines proved useless after authorities shut off utilities to the area.
In Washington, cellphone circuits were overloaded with panicked residents'
calls.
Iridium Satellite delivered 42 phones to Defense Department officials on
Wednesday to distribute to Federal Emergency Management Agency and National
Guard workers at the Pentagon, D'Ambrosio said.
He said the United Nations, which was in the midst of contract talks for
service, activated the Iridium units atop its New York headquarters and took
possession of enough phones to keep its senior staff connected globally.
Motorola spokeswoman Barbara Millman said her company has trucked 360 phones
from its Illinois manufacturing plant to New York City for FEMA use.
An additional 340 phones were to be shipped once authorities decide where
they want them, she said. She also said Motorola is providing the phones and
service free for 30 days.
Further, Stratos Global Corp. of Bethesda, Md., was trucking 400 Iridium
phones from its Florida location to Washington to distribute to federal and
municipal customers.
"If all goes like we think it will, they will deplete that in the next two
days," D'Ambrosio said.
Besides the Tempe gateway, another is located outside Rome, and the Defense
Department maintains its own in Hawaii.
The Motorola system ran afoul of a variety of problems, including a stiff
price for the phones, high operating costs, shipment delays and poor sound
quality.
D'Ambrosio said sound now is close to cellphone quality with "a little twing
to it." The phones which once cost $3,500 each now go for $500 to $1,500.
Airtime that had cost $4 to $11 a minute now runs $1 to $1.50 a minute.
Iridium works through a system of 66 satellites circling 485 miles above the
Earth.
When someone makes a call on an Iridium phone to another Iridium phone user,
the signal goes up to a satellite, across the satellite system and down to
the call recipient, "so you never touch the Earth," D'Ambrosio said.
If the Iridium phone user is calling someone on a cellphone or a land line,
the signal makes an additional stop at one of Iridium's three global
gateways, which then sends it to the recipient's land-based network.
The phones also can be used to transmit e-mail and faxes and to view the
Internet.
Motorola began Iridium service in late 1998 after several years of costly
development and quickly slid into bankruptcy the following summer.
Commercial service was shut down in March 2000 when Motorola was unable to
find a buyer or investor. The new owners paid $25 million to acquire the
system and launched it again in last March.
So far the new company has distributed about 20,000 units, D'Ambrosio said.
"It probably validates what the original concept was and why a system like
Iridium exists," D'Ambrosio said.

notable because it marked a new spirit of cooperation in U.S. relations with
Latin America.

United Carbon - A Mr. Nelson (I think Oscar) started the company in the
1920's in Charleston, WV. The company was building plants in Texas c. 1930.
They opened the largest carbon black plant near Odessa in 1945. Ashland Oil
purchased United Carbon in 1956, but it continued as a subsidiary.
United Carbon today has about 14% of the carbon black market. Recently Cabot
has taken over this company.
