A little background information.
Roosevelt was the "Peace Candidate" in the
Presidential Election of 1940.
The war was already going in Europe and the American
People wanted no part of it. The opinion polls were
about 80 percent against the U.S. getting into the
war. In his campaign speeches, FDR promised
repeatedly
that: "I am not about to send your sons to fight and
die in another European War."
Having so clearly promised not to enter the war,
and with public opinion so strongly against U.S.
involvement....something very dramatic was needed
to turn the tide in favor of war.
In June-July of 1941, FDR ordered a cut-off of all
U.S. oil exports to Japan. (Denial of a strategic
resource is, in itself, an act of war).
FDR closed the Panama Canal to Japanese ships.
In November of 1941 FDR issued an Ultimatum to
Japan to get their military out of Manchuria.
He was, in effect, putting a chip on his shoulder
and daring the Japanese to knock it off...and hoping
they would knock it off.
They did on December 7, 1941.
The attack on Pearl Harbor produced a total change
in American Public opinion.
The American People now DEMANDED WAR!!!
It was then easy for Roosevelt to ask Congress for
a Declaration of War....and easy for Congress to
approve it.
The bottom line is that FDR was spoiling for war
and looking for a way to get the U.S. into it.
It was a calculated series of steps that resulted
in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The U.S. Government was culpable.
We had broken the Japanese Codes.
FDR and his top people knew the Japanese aircraft
carriers were on their way and they did nothing
to stop the attack. They didn't even warn the
Hawaiian military commanders.
2,500 U.S. servicemen were sacrificed intentionally
to get our country into World War 2.
Of course....our government would never lie
to us today.
