-Caveat Lector- I became a scholar of WWI political and social repression in the U.S. back in highschool, during the height of the Vietnam War; I had a termpaper due for a class in U.S. History, taught by someone who equated dissonance with treason...like most of his generation, he was not shy in expressing his opinion that "we always supported our government when we went to war, what's wrong with you kids?" So it was delight that I discovered one day, as I worked as a volunteer in the school library checking in new acquisitions, a multivolume set by Time-Life Books called "That Fabulous Century", with each volume covering one decade (presumably they published 3 final volumes to round out the century?".... And amazingly enough the volume covering 1910-1919 had quite a bit regarding the strong antiwar movement of WWI...prior to reading that I'd believed what I had been told and taught that there was 100 percent agreement by all citizens to support our entry into the war... Starting with that volume, I did further research, including reading various biographies on the amazing Eugene V. Debs (whether you agree with his socialist philosophy or not, one does have to give the man credit for accomplishing a great many things, not the least of which is getting close to 20 million votes in the 1920 election while he was in jail).... And what was Debs in jail for? For violation of one of the hundreds of picayune things defined as 'treason' under the draconian Alien and Sedition Act that Congress passed soon after war was declared. Under that act, merely criticizing the design of the 'doughboy' helmut would land one in jail. So would criticizing the Red Cross (which had been caught in a scandal, selling cigarettes to soldiers, cigarettes that had been donated by the public to be distributed free of charge to the soldiers)... A local group of Quaker women who met every day at Quaker headquarters in Washington D.C. to work on various peace issues were one day given an order by the commander of the U.S. forces stationed in D.C. to guard the capital to immediately stop what they were doing and go home and stay there (basically being put under house arrest) or, the commander threatened, they would be 'raided and raped'... "Political Correctness" is nothing new...during WWI anything with even a vaguely Germanic sounding name was renamed...hamburger becamed 'liberty sausage', sauerkraut became 'liberty cabbage', dachshunds were renamed 'liberty dogs'...great works of literature by German authors were burned in huge bonfires organized like pep rallies, and orchestral works by German composers were banned from public performances... Any man with an accent was forced to publicly pledge allegiance to the flag at his place of work, or face being fired. One naturalized citizen was made to crawl across his shop floor and kiss the flag to 'prove' his love of his adopted country. Teddy Roosevelt referred with contempt to these people as 'hyphenated Americans' (e.g. "German-American", "Hungarian-American", etc.) And there were lynchings. Lots of them. Just because someone had originally come from one of the Axis countries, or their parents or grandparents had. One victim was a 12-year old boy whose parents had immigrated from Germany -- the boy had been born here, so was automatically a citizen of the U.S. These lynchings didn't occur in small, backwater towns in rural America, but occured in downtown areas of major cities, such as Cincinnati...
