Army Units Ordered to Deploy

   By Charles Aldinger

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Army units have been ordered to deploy for
possible military operations as part of a major Pentagon (news - web sites)
build-up in and around the Middle East in response to last week's attacks on
America, Army Secretary Thomas White said on Thursday.

White refused to provide any details, including whether elite Special
Operations troops might move toward the region around Afghanistan (news - web
sites) where prime suspect Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) and his
organization are believed to be based, but added that ``Army elements were
part of the deployment order.''

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Wednesday signed an order that included
plans to move as many as 100 or more heavy bombers, fighters, aerial
refueling planes and other combat aircraft toward the Middle East and Central
Asia region.

Washington has accused Afghanistan's ruling Taliban of harboring fugitive
guerrilla leader bin Laden and has warned Kabul that it could face attack if
he is not turned over to the United States.

While the Defense Department refused flatly to discuss details of Rumsfeld's
order or where the aircraft and troop units might go, individual Air Force
units confirmed on Thursday that they had been ordered to go.

PART OF 'INFINITE JUSTICE'

``We have received an order to deploy,'' Air Force Capt. James Cunningham, a
spokesman for the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota,
told Reuters. He would not say whether any of the big swing-wing B-1 bombers
in the unit had begun moving.

``We did receive a deployment order and we are ready to go,'' said Air Force
Staff Sgt. Scott Sturkol, a spokesman with the 319th Air Refueling Wing at
Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota. A total of 48 big KC-135 refueling
planes are stationed there.

The deployment, part of a build-up dubbed ``Operation Infinite Justice,'' is
the first under President Bush (news - web sites)'s declared ''war on
terrorism.'' He has vowed to punish culprits responsible for ramming hijacked
airliners into the Pentagon and New York's World Trade Center on Sept. 11 and
crashing a fourth plane in Pennsylvania, as well as states that support and
harbor such groups.

Defense officials refused to confirm or deny a report in Thursday's
Washington Post newspaper that aircraft would not only go to the Gulf region
and the Indian Ocean but -- in an unprecedented move -- to the former Soviet
republics of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan near Afghanistan.

The Navy also sent an additional aircraft carrier toward the Middle East
region on Wednesday, a move that along with the air deployment could place up
to 500 U.S. warplanes in the Mediterranean, Gulf and Indian Ocean areas for
what Washington has suggested could be a strike against Afghanistan.

Two other American carriers are already in the region. The USS Carl Vinson is
in the Gulf and the USS Enterprise is just outside of the Gulf in the
Northern Indian Ocean.

The three carriers pack a total of more than 210 strike and support aircraft.

Defense officials have said privately that a wide range of military options
are being studied in connection with a combined diplomatic, financial and
military approach to the problem of terror groups.

The Post reported that those options could include strikes into Afghanistan
by small, elite Army combat units to capture or kill bin Laden, followed by
heavy bombing of guerrilla bases.

``We have a very strong Special Operations capability in the Army and I'm
sure it will be used,'' White told reporters in a question-and-answer session
on Thursday. He refused to be more specific.''
