OSAMA PLOTTED TO FREE SHEIK BY SNATCHING U.S. BIG: EX-SOLDIER

September 27, 2001 -- An ex-soldier for Osama bin Laden says the terror
chief planned to kidnap a high-ranking U.S. official and offer to swap
him for the blind sheik imprisoned for the 1993 World Trade Center
attack.
"The next plan is to release Omar Abdel Rahman from jail," the former
fighter says on ABC's "PrimeTime Thursday."
"Maybe they kidnap [an] ambassador there and bring him to Afghanistan,
and ask for release. They are trying, even now, just looking for a
chance."
Rahman is serving a life sentence in a maximum-security federal prison
for masterminding the WTC bombing eight years ago.
The fighter, who goes by the pseudonym "Max," tells the network - in an
interview conducted at a secret location before the Sept. 11 attacks -
he believes bin Laden's international terrorist network, al Qaeda, would
be willing to conduct an armed operation to pull off the abduction, even
though "it would be difficult for them."
Asked if the official could be kidnapped in the United States, "Max"
says: "Yeah, it's possible, to hijack plane, or . . ."
The terrorist, who said he trained at an al Qaeda camp, says he heard
bin Laden's chief of security Saif Al-Adel speak of the kidnap plot.
The retired soldier also says bin Laden is convinced he will eventually
be killed by the United States and is afraid of dying.
"He doesn't stay more than 48 hours in one location and he changes cars,
and buses, and so, it means that he's scared."
But, Max said, there are other terrorists ready to step in and replace
him.
"It's not that small an organization . . . It's more than 3,000.
Different nationalities . . . Armed," he says.
One of bin Laden's escape methods is by way of a "very old" Mercedes
bus, he says. The interview airs tonight at 10 p.m. on WABC/Channel 7.
