Woman has working ovary put in her arm By Eddie Fitzmaurice, London A former cancer patient has made medical history by having a fully functioning ovary implanted in her arm. The revolutionary operation involved removing strips of ovarian tissue from the woman's womb and threading it under the skin on her right arm. Doctors yesterday revealed the procedure had been a complete success with the grafted ovary producing eggs and reproductive hormones. Drugs are used to "kick start" the ovarian tissue, which appears as a small lump on the arm. Each month the ovary grows to the size of a golf ball and triggers the same symptoms as a normal menstrual cycle. It is hoped that the 37-year-old woman will eventually have children using eggs from the ovary. They would be fertilised in a test tube, with the resulting embryo put into her womb. The American woman, who has not been named, underwent the startling 90-minute operation at the New York Methodist Hospital. Dr Kutluk Oktay, who pioneered the treatment, said the technique could benefit thousands of women diagnosed with cancer during their child-bearing years. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can damage the ovaries, leaving women infertile. Dr Oktay, 38, of Cornell University, told the Journal Of The American Medical Association: "The next step is to get the patient pregnant.
