IN DOCUMENTS SADDAM HUSSEIN'S LINKS WITH INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM
INC CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF SADDAM AS PART OF ANTI-TERROR STRATEGY
WASHINGTON, DC (24 September 2001): The Iraqi National Congress has
documented links between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden s
international terror network.
In early 1999 the INC reported that Farouk Hijazi, a senior Iraqi
intelligence official, traveled to Kandahar Afghanistan to meet bin Laden
personally. This meeting took place in December 1998. Hijazi was
accompanied by a group of Iraqi intelligence officers. Hijazi is currently
Iraqi ambassador in Turkey; he previously served as head of the foreign
covert operations division of the Iraqi Intelligence Service (Mukhabarat).
The Iraqi Mukhabarat has been involved in numerous terrorist actions in the
Middle East and Europe since Saddam Hussein s regime came to power in 1979.
The INC has also learned that one of the terrorists involved in the
September 11th atrocity, Mohammed Atta, met an Iraqi intelligence official
in Prague earlier this year. The Iraqi official, who is known to be a
close associate of Hijazi, was posing as a diplomat at the Iraqi embassy in
the Czech Republic. It is well known that the Iraqi Mukhabarat uses
diplomatic cover as a means to move personnel and money into foreign
countries.
Saddam s history of terrorism and his continuing efforts to develop
nuclear, biological and chemical weapons make him a threat to the peace and
stability of the entire world. Any comprehensive strategy to fight
terrorism must include the removal of Saddam s regime as a major element.
