They're not teaching my daughter about that in economics class, that's for sure. The fact is, any money spent is good according to the economists; that's the dirty little secret of the American way of life. The worst thing for the US economy is a consumer who is not consuming (spending). That's why we have personal bankruptcy, which basically allows people to resume consumption.
