BEING "UNPATRIOTIC!"

I live in a small farm community which has a radio station called KOMY! The
above headline, which was NOT written by me -- is wrong! KOMY is in Watsonville, a
small town about 15 miles south of Santa Cruz.
Santa Cruz is so leftist liberal you'd think they were part of communist
China, rather than the United States. Watsonville is slightly more moderate due to the
large number of farmers as opposed to Santa Cruz's University students! Santa Cruz is
where I was born and I graduated from UCSC. If anyone has a right to criticize Santa
Cruz, I do!
I now live in Watsonville, and the only station I can get without interference
is the Watsonville station KOMY. It is the sister station to Santa Cruz radio station,
KSCO.
Up until about a year ago, KOMY had a morning program featuring Jim Hightower.
While he wasn't my favorite talk show host, he did have interesting guests and I liked
the quality of research he presented!
Then Jim was replaced with some jerk named Peter Werbe. I tried listening to
him a few times, but he was so rude to some of his callers, namely the ones that
disagreed with him, that I turned him off and listened to classical music. For me, a
talk show junky, to turn off a talk show host... you KNOW they have to be BAD!!
Werbe's politics are those that you expect to find at a far left liberal
institution like the University of California at Berkeley and sadly, at MY Alma Mater,
the University of California at SANTA CRUZ!!
Because I had stopped listening to KOMY at the time Werbe was on, I did not
know he had been replaced! The first I heard of it was in a station editorial by KOMY
co-owner, Kaye Zwerling. I was in my car at the time, and her editorial was so moving
that I had tears streaming down my face and I had to wipe my eyes to see the road!
Needless to say, I agreed with what she had to say, both about Peter Werbe AND
about the need for our country to come together at this time. I believe healthy debate
is good and necessary for a country. Peter Werbe does NOT debate! When he discovers
that a caller is a conservative, the caller is cut off.
I believe that NO writer should be censored, except when that writer is
putting the lives of our men and women and/or our country in danger!
I believe that talk show hosts like Werbe and others that you find on CNN, CBS
and other mainstream media outlets, give our enemies support and actually turn some of
our more mush-minded citizens into anti-American supporters of our enemies!
I do not consider myself an authority on Peter Werbe, I just know I didn't
like him and was very glad to find out that he was gone from my hometown station in
the land of the Jolly Green Giant!
You can't imagine my surprise when I found an email, OF SUPPORT, for Peter
Werbe on the RMNews Updates! I have left it there, in its original form, so everyone
can see it!!

This Saturday, October 27th at 10:00AM California time, Peter Werbe is going
to be on KOMY and sister station KSCO in a debate with co-owners Michael and Kaye
Zwerling.
I am certain that this is going to be one of the more exciting Saturday
Specials that KSCO/KOMY has ever produced.
I encourage all of my readers who are in our area to tune in and listen to one
of the last bastions of privately owned talk radio in the nation!

The following is a KSCO editorial.
Now, here is KSCO co-owner, Kaye Zwerling
KAYE ZWERLING:
Some months ago we installed a separate comment line for listeners who chose
to ventilate concerns or offer kudos regarding programming. On September the 11th,
that fateful day when the unthinkable happened, our country lost its innocence when it
was brutally attacked and thousands of innocent and brave people perished.
Their families' lives have changed forever. We have all changed forever. Now
we face a war, possibly a very long and costly war to find and punish the cowardly
monsters of this dastardly act to make certain that what they did to our country will
never happen again.
President Bush and his advisors carefully and thoughtfully took three weeks to
prepare what needed to be done and to identify the culprits.
Most Americans and most countries of the world are in support of his actions.
However there are some people who vigorously disagree. As pacifists they want us to
think about this issue very carefully, assume the dead roach position, study and
understand why part of the world hates us -
these pacifists believe that love and patient understanding will get us though
this.
I see it as a recipe for annihilation. If in our efforts to be humanitarian
and help other nations, we may have harmed them - well let's deal with that and fix it
later, after we destroy the animals who are committed to destroying us.
Now back to the station's comment line --
Until about a year ago we had Jim Hightower, a reasonable Democrat on KOMY.
Suddenly, Hightower was replaced by Peter Werbe. Probably by the syndicator of both.
We had no contract with Werbe. But we kept him on for a year and businesses
did NOT want to sponsor him. Werbe is an extreme leftist whose mission it is to tear
down the opposition and President Bush has been his favorite target for ridicule. In
fact, many regular listeners complained about him and stopped tuning in to our station.
Well, Werbe's comments may have played well with some and may have been fair
game in normal times, but these are NOT normal times. We're now engaged in a war.
So, as of several weeks ago Werbe is no longer on KOMY. Now he goes on the
internet, states his case, in third person - is that cowardly or what? - Spins it and
screams foul and claims that his free speech rights are violated! Is this nuts?
Now a number of angry listeners are using the station comment line to say some
very ugly and menacing things. Others are sending angry e-mails and few have signed
their names.
Please understand that we, the owners, have been the sponsors for Werbe's show
for a year, and we no longer choose to subsidize him. Bottom line, Werbe has a right
to his free speech and we have the right not to have him on our station.
Maybe these listeners could find a place for Werbe on public supported radio.
His kind of rhetoric is welcomed by some in peacetime but now we are in a battle for
the very survival for our way of life. And we do not wish to be an active party for
political divisiveness which will give aid to the enemy and weaken our county's
resolve!
Our men and women in the armed forces, who are fighting this war for us and
may be dying for us, must know that we are with them. We cannot withstand another Viet
Nam War fiasco when the country was bitterly divided and torn apart.
The chilling truth is, this may be our only chance to get it right - we
destroy the enemy or they destroy us.
And make no mistake -- this is their agenda!
I believe our mission is clear - we must - as a country, come together.
To paraphrase the words of Benjamin Franklin, spoken at the signing of the
Declaration of Independence:
"We had better all hang together or we will surely hang separately."

Station Swamped with Phone Calls and Emails Protesting Cancellation.
Station Owner Hysterical on Air
After broadcasting for a year on a Santa Cruz AM station, left-of-center
talk show host, Peter Werbe, had his program suddenly yanked from KOMY-AM
without even notification to him or his network. The many listeners who
called the KOMY management were told that the show had no sponsors and few
listeners. The station never sought ads for the program, but the management
said it aired Peter's program to balance its bevy of right-wing show.
However, even without any promotion, the show had a growing audience as
evidenced by the high number of calls Peter's program received daily from
the station's broadcast area.
Facing with growing complaints from the Santa Cruz audience, on Oct. 6, the
KOMY station owner took to the airwaves and denounced the show and its host,
and "apologized' to the people of Santa Cruz for having him on "his"
airwaves. On Oct. 18, station owner, Michael Zwerling, called Peter an
"asshole," because the station was receiving so many complaints. Local
residents are considering a license challenge and a complaint for the
owner's language.
Peter broadcasts on the ieamerica Radio Network based in Detroit , and is
one of only two left of center nationally syndicated programs on the AM
band. The other liberal host is Mike Malloy.

Werbe is a veteran talk show host from Detroit with 30 years experience in
talk radio.

Peter's show is broadcast on the AM band in 14 cities and on the Internet
from the ieamerica web site.
Finally, dogged by what was becoming a community issue in Santa Cruz, KOMY
owner's mother, Kay Zwerling, the power behind the throne, similarly
denounced the show and Peter during an on-air editorial, October 16, to
explain why the station had dropped the program. She specifically mentioned
its left of center content, Peter's criticism of the Bush administration,
and his questions about the attacks on Afghanistan. This undisguised attack
on freedom of speech, and clear violation of the station's license, which
obligates it to serve the community, not the owner's right wing politics,
must be fought!

them politely this assault on the 1st Amendment is unacceptable and
inconsistent with their FCC operating license.
