BIN LADEN AGENTS IN LEBANON DIVIDED OVER MONEY
LONDON [MENL] -- Supporters of Saudi billionaire fugitive Osama Bin
Laden are said to have split into opposition faction amid a halt in
funding. The London-based Al Hayat daily reported on Tuesday that the
Usbat Al Ansar group in Lebanon has been split into four faction.
Usbat Al Ansar is aligned with Bin Laden's Al Qaida movement and was
said to have been involved in the insurgency in northern Lebanon last
year. The group is based in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein
Hilwe, where it trains for missions in Lebanon and abroad. The United
States has pressed Lebanon to end the group's activities. The
newspaper said Usbat Al Ansar underwent a split since the Sept. 11
suicide attacks on New York and Washington, attributed to Bin Laden.
The subsequent U.S. retaliation against Bin Laden in Afghanistan and
the anti-terror coalition organized by the United States have
resulted in a cutoff of funding to Usbat Al Ansar, headed by Ahmed
Abdul Karim Al Saadi. Bin Laden was expected to supply new funding to
Usbat Al Ansar. But an envoy from the group sent to Afghanistan prior
to Sept. 11 has not returned to Lebanon. The funding was meant to
facilitate new attacks by Usbat Al Ansar. The government in Beirut
has been given a list of more than 60 names of suspected terrorists
believed living in Lebanon. Arab diplomatic sources said many of them
are from Usbat Al Ansar. Al Hayat reports that Usbat Al Ansar
consists of 40 hardcore members whose identities are not known by
Lebanese authorities. The newspaper said the members live in Ein
Hilwe.
