The problem with the U.S. is too many immigrants from Europe brought their tired old habits with them and refused to let them go. I finally realised in the last coupla days that in spite of all the hoopla about the 4th of July and Lexington/Concord and Washington (the man), this history is actually the history of a foreign country to most whose relatives emigrated here after the facts. Thus, there's no real connexion UNTIL we get into a war that causes some sacrifice and therefore some reNEWed national unity. This,a I think, is the old Communist revolutionary (as differentiated from the American revolutionary) doctrine: no pain, no gain. No change is possible without some violent conflict. So, after a certain number of new immigrants enter the country, we have to have a war to galvanise them into "real" Americans. Except for those who hold dual citizenships ... always a way out. The Palestine issue is attractive to Americans because here's a real live example of Indians and settlers or Indians and cavalry or whatever combination that be a-happenin'. Not much different than many an old "B" western, except any good Native Palestinian seems to be a Dead Palestinian. Reservations, discrimination, inflated senses of territorial entitlement, and on and on. In this sense, "Israel = U.S.".
