Mother Charged In Toddler's Death
Two Older Daughters Fled D.C. Home After Struggle Over Knife, Affidavit Says

A mother accused of fatally stabbing her 15-month-old daughter initially struggled with one of her children over the knife and told the toddler and two older daughters, "Satan told me to kill you," according to a court affidavit.
The other daughters, ages 7 and 9, fled their Southeast Washington home, the affidavit said. Their baby sister was found Tuesday night fatally stabbed in the neck in a second-floor bedroom.
Norma McNeil, 31, was arraigned in D.C. Superior Court yesterday and charged with first-degree murder while armed in the death of her daughter Aniya Lockhart. She was ordered held without bond, and her two other daughters were put in the care of the city's Child Protective Services.
In court yesterday, a stoic McNeil was dressed in a white jump suit with black jacket and stood with her hands behind her back. Her public defender, Colleen McCrystal, told the hearing commissioner that she would not raise competency issues for now.
A Nov. 29 hearing was set to determine whether McNeil should remain in custody without bond.
McNeil was known to the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency, according to a D.C. government source, who provided limited details. In 1999, McNeil was having problems with a difficult teenage daughter, and the agency intervened to place that daughter with a relative. The daughter ran away, the source said, and by the time the agency located her, she had had a baby.
The case was opened in September 1999 and closed the following month, the source said. Jo Ann A. Williams, a spokeswoman for the agency, said there were no open cases involving McNeil.
Tuesday's incident began shortly before 7 p.m. at McNeil's home in the 1300 block of Morris Road SE, a block that has had its share of tragedies over the years, including several fatal shootings.
According to the affidavit, McNeil's two older daughters told police that their mother approached the three children with a knife, telling them, "Satan told me to kill you."
One daughter responded, "We don't want to die," and then asked McNeil to give her the knife, according to the affidavit. A struggle began, and the mother tried to stab the daughter.
McNeil then put down the knife and persuaded all three children to get on the bed.
"We are going to suffer, and our bodies are going to ache," McNeil told them, picking up the knife again, according to the affidavit. The two older daughters ran downstairs and fled the house, leaving the 15-month-old toddler behind.
The mother left the home. A short time later, police found her at Union Temple Baptist Church, eating a slice of pizza. She was taken to the 7th District police station on Alabama Avenue SE for questioning.
McNeil had a minor brush with the law last year, according to court records.
In September 2000, she was arrested for allegedly scratching a vehicle belonging to Aniya's father, James Lockhart. He told police that McNeil scratched his Dodge Neon with some object after she dropped their child off at his home.
McNeil pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge of destruction of property, records show, and the case was dismissed in January because prosecutors were not ready for trial.
Lockhart declined to comment yesterday.
McNeil has had numerous addresses in Washington, including two homes in the 4300 block of Third Street SE, according to court records.
Neighbors said McNeil's family had moved into the Morris Road address this summer, occupying an old home that had been vacant. Neighbors said that although McNeil sometimes seemed friendly, she also could suddenly become angry, seeming irrational and confronting them for a small or imagined slight.

You know, Joe, and I know you do, with all these loose nuts
running around under the umbrella of the Judeo-Christian faith
killing their kids and then trying to justify it through pointing at
some equally incredulous cause of the increasing failure of their
faithful beliefs (as opposed to factual knowledge), I fail to see *why*
you even bother to suggest attacking one work of fiction ("Potter",
i.e.) and don't do a comprehensive disbunking investigatorial report
on the big book of myth and legend, AKA *the Bible*.

This is not to say that there is some historical and factual parts of
the book BUT, after having been through so many human (i.e.,
fallible, as in "organised religion", i.e.) hands and minds and
revisions and editions over the centuries, especially since it was
written decades AFTER the Nazarene was crucified, after all that it
has gone through, one really has to wonder who can really
rationally suggest that it other than just another collection of
stories.

You all (Northern for the Southern "everybody") tend to point fingers
at the Islamicists and the fiction writers and tend to ignore that
those who are responsible for perpetuating *their* stories are not
any different than those who rely on the writings of generationally
removed authors.

Now: You have all the data from the various reportage sources.
How's about going back and cataloguing all the deaths caused by
men and women who would be likely to be found "at Union Temple
Baptist Church, eating a slice of pizza". We read of the woman
who drowned her kids in Texas (religion?), we read of another
drowning the other day ("Satan" was an element), and now we read
this pizza-eater wielding knives at her kids. This doesn't even go
near the dirty little secret of homophilic clerics who get "nearer to
thee than G*d (for a little while)" and ruin the kids' perspectives on
life.

Deflecting attention to others does not immediately remedy the fact
that one's own house is in disorder.
