Jailed writer, attorney will try Supreme Court review

The attorney for would-be writer Vanessa Leggett, jailed for refusing
to surrender her notes about a Houston

society slaying, said Thursday he plans to argue for her release
before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Attorney Mike DeGeurin said he learned this week that his request
for a hearing before the full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in

New Orleans had been denied.

After informing Leggett of the decision Thursday, the two decided
jointly to appeal to the Supreme Court, DeGeurin said.

Leggett, 33, has been jailed since July 20, when a federal district court judge found
her in contempt of court for refusing to turn

over her notes and interviews related to the 1997 shooting death of Doris Angleton.

The notes were subpoenaed by a federal grand jury investigating Angleton's husband,
millionaire former bookie Robert Angleton.

In August, a three-member panel of the 5th Circuit upheld the contempt ruling by U.S.
District Judge Melinda Harmon.

"The government is trying to use her as their investigative tool," DeGeurin said. "But
enough time has gone by that I imagine their

agents have been able to talk to the same people she talked to. So any need for that
material has probably passed."

DeGeurin said he will ask the Supreme Court to review the decisions of Harmon and the
5th Circuit.

Federal agents began investigating Robert Angleton after a state court acquitted him
in 1998 of hiring his brother to murder his

wife.

Robert Angleton's brother, Roger Angleton, committed suicide in February 1998 before
being tried for capital murder.

Leggett was researching the circumstances surrounding the death of Doris Angleton for
a book she planned to write.
