Bin Laden Internet club probe http://www.thecouriermail.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936 ,3245449%255E15630%20,00.html Chris Griffith 14nov01 AN Internet club carrying militant messages supporting terrorist Osama bin Laden was established just two days before the September 11 attacks in the US. The Courier-Mail yesterday gained access to the club entitled "War in Afghanistan" and subtitled "George Bush must be brought to justice for murder" which includes a chat room. Internet host Yahoo.com. lists the site as founded on September 9 two days before commercial aircraft crashed into the World Trade Centre. One message in September posted under the name "maktabalkhidamat" says: "Allah surely blesses you for this club. Jihad is declared and Satan will be struck as he has been. In the name of Allah, we will strike the serpent and victory is ours." Another, posted two weeks after the attack, says: "the tyranny of the USA will be something that is only read in history books". The Courier-Mail yesterday forwarded details of the still-functioning site to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation through the American embassy. Apart from the militant messages, it is the timing of the club's creation 48 hours before the World Trade Centre bombing that has experts wondering what the site's founders knew of the looming US attacks and what chat room communication passed through it initially. The club's noticeboard includes a now-deleted message "You Haven't Seen Anything Yet" posted between September 9 and 16 and messages urging Muslims to rise up and annihilate the US. The "War in Afghanistan" site contains 76 members and Yahoo.com lists the group as having three founders under apparently fictitious names. Brisbane computer expert Ray Shaw said it was possible the Yahoo chat room was a vehicle for anonymous communication between terrorists at the time of the US attacks. Mr Shaw said that by using aliases, terrorists could anonymously communicate through chat rooms from any cyber cafe in the world. He said it would be unlikely they could be traced if they accessed the chat room through an Internet site designed to guarantee anonymity. Despite claims of widespread censorship, sites supporting the Taliban also are easily found on the Internet. One labelled "Azzam Publications for Jihad and Mujahideen" on- line yesterday has a section on "What you can do to help the Taliban" and quotes Taliban leader Mullah Muhammad Omar urging Muslims not to be cowards. "Don't be cowards! I am ready for sacrifice. . . . The people you see in other countries are afraid. What is their reason for fear?" Mr Shaw said the listed September 9 creation date of the Yahoo club would be authentic as the date and time would be taken from Yahoo's central computer system when the on-line club was created. ------- End of forwarded message ------- www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
