CONDIT’S ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

There are only two possible explanations, in this writer’s opinion, for Gary Condit’s continued public silence on Chandra Levy’s disappearance.

The first reason would be that he was criminally involved, directly or indirectly, in Chandra’s disappearance and presumed death. If that were true, his behavior would be entirely consistent with that guilt. However, if he was involved in her death, it would not likely have anything to do with his intimate relationship with her.

Condit, we are learning more each week, had a history of affairs with younger women. According to his former driver, he led most of them to believe he would eventually leave his wife for them. Condit had a m.o. of breaking up with the women if they started pressing him too hard. It did not include physical violence. No, if Condit was involved in her disappearance (and death) it was for a much more important reason than any possible disclosure she could have made about his personal life.

This leads to the only other reasonable explanation for Condit’s silence.

Chandra has somehow come into possession of knowledge that made her very dangerous to powerful people. It may have been at her job researching records of the Bureau of Prisons. It could have been something that Condit himself let slip from information he had from his membership on the Permanent House Select Committee on Intelligence. Or, it could have come from another boyfriend (from the FBI?)

At any rate, the information was so damaging that she had to be eliminated. Condit may have been told to break off his relationship because Chandra had become "radioactive." This would also explain her premature dismissal from her intern job at the Bureau of Prisons.

Even if Condit had nothing to do with her disappearance and death, he most likely would know why she had to be taken out if not who was responsible. It is doubtful he has any specific knowledge about who was responsible or he wouldn’t be walking around today.

Still, Condit is between a rock and a hard place. He can’t take a lie detector test where the question might be asked, "Do you know of any reason anyone would want to kill or harm Chandra Levi?"

If the (honest) authorities believe Condit knows a reason, then Condit becomes as dangerous to the powerful people as Chandra was. Conversely, the more Condit’s image is damaged by continuing revelations about his personnel life, the less leverage the perpetrators would have to blackmail him into silence. That means that with each revelation, Condit poses much the same danger Chandra did.

Condit’s political career is irretrievable. Many of his constituents may forgive the adultery, and even the stonewalling if they believe it was just about (normal) sex. But as the S & M side of Condit’s sexual activity sinks in, his political career is toast.

The insiders in the intelligence community may be trying to take some of the pressure off Condit. The FBI seems to be saying the investigation needs to be broadened into looking at some of Chandra’s other contacts. While perfectly reasonable, it has the effect of diverting some attention from Condit and lessening the possibility he may do something really rash, like telling the truth.

Meanwhile, the D.C. police are on a wild goose chase based in part on the analysis of websites visited on Chandra’s laptop computer. According to Fox News, that analysis was done by the Secret Service, not the D.C. police.

There must be a gut feeling in potential witnesses that admission of any knowledge of the case could be dangerous to them. Residents in Chandra’s apartment building seem to be avoiding questioning by the police, and his many paramours have been very reluctant to "go public." The only exception has been the flight attendant Anne Marie Smith and she said the only reason she came forward publicly was because she thought she would be safer (the Linda Tripp example).

Condit finds himself in a "catch 22" situation and his situation becomes more fraught with danger with each passing day.
