WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peace at any cost is a Prelude to War! November 30, 2001 Rumsfeld: No let up By Vince Crawley Times staff writer Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says there will be no let up in the military’s anti-terrorism campaign. He warned Pentagon reporters Friday that more casualties are almost certain as more U.S. forces become involved in operations inside Afghanistan. “Let there be no doubt, there will be further casualties in this campaign, in Afghanistan and elsewhere,” Rumsfeld said in a joint news conference with Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs. “There will be other downturns involving our forces,” Rumsfeld said. “We may have troops captured or killed. But it will not deter us, for a day or for a moment, from our objectives. We are going after al-Qaida and the Taliban that support them, and terrorists and their supporters wherever we find them. Commanders at every level have been unambiguously instructed, and they know that our mission is clear and our will is unwavering. There will be no pauses, no regroupings, no stand-downs.” Well over 1,000 U.S. troops are now in the war-torn country as U.S.-backed rebel groups continue trying to wipe out remaining pockets of Taliban fighters. The Taliban has shielded terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaida network, believed responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks which killed almost 4,000 people in the United States. Rumsfeld said bin Laden has used Afghanistan as a “lily pad” from which to launch his attacks around the world. More than 1,000 Marines have occupied an airbase in southern Afghanistan. Hundreds of special operations forces are working in the country, most of them accompanying anti-Taliban forces and helping to coordinate U.S. airstrikes. Small numbers of soldiers from the Army’s 10th Mountain Division are also occupying two airports — one near Kabul, the other at Mazar-e Sharif — in an attempt to open those airstrips for humanitarian deliveries. The United States suffered its first combat casualty in the campaign a week ago when CIA agent Mike Spann, a former Marine, was killed during a Taliban prisoner-of-war uprising in Mazar-e-Sharif. Five U.S. soldiers also were wounded by an American-fired missile in the uprising. *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U. S. C.
