Russian admiral, chief of staff sacked after Kursk sinking The commander of the Russian Northern Fleet, Admiral Vyacheslav Popov, has been fired after making "serious mistakes" in connection with the sinking of the Kursk submarine 16 months ago, Interfax reported. Popov, along with the head of the joint chiefs of staff of the Northern Fleet, Mikhail Motsak, were relieved of their functions and demoted "for serious mistakes in organizing the fleet's manoeuvres," Admiral Vladimir Kuriedov said according to Interfax. But Kuriedov said that there was no direct link between the dismissals and the sinking of the Kursk. Earlier Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin met Admiral Kuriedov, Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov, army chief Anatoly Kvashin and chief prosecutor Vladimir Ustinov to discuss the provisional conclusions of the Kursk inquiry. Putin underlined afterwards that it was not possible given the available evidence to establish a direct connection between the actions of those responsible on board the Kursk and the heavy consequences that followed. He added that all the various hypotheses put forward for the disaster were still being examined.
