Psalm 83.1-5, 17-18 This Week's Headlines: :: DEVASTATION AND DESTRUCTION IN JERUSALEM :: JERUSALEM BOMBINGS FOLLOW EARLIER MURDERS :: IDF REENTERS PALESTINIAN AREAS IN WAKE OF ATTACKS :: ZINNI GETS BIRDS-EYE VIEW OF KILLINGS :: FOR SEVEN DAYS OF QUIET, SHARON WILL REWARD ARAFAT WITH A STATE :: WAQF IS DESTROYING TEMPLE MOUNT WALL :: ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS THWARTED :: CHANUKAH SITES :: IRAQ ALSO GETS INVOLVED :: IDF TOO MUCH FOR SYRIA :: DEVASTATION AND DESTRUCTION IN JERUSALEM: At about 11:30 pm Saturday night, two suicide bombers detonated powerful explosive devices seconds apart on Ben Yehuda Street in Jerusalem, near Zion Square. The suicide bombers had laced their bodies with nails and screws in order to inflict as much harm as possible to the many civilians who were dining in the nearby restaurants and coffee shops in Jerusalem's outdoor pedestrian mall. About 15-20 minutes later, a car bomb exploded on Rabbi Kook Street near Jaffe Street, intended to strike persons that fled the earlier attack as well as emergency personnel responding to the scene. As of this report, there are 11 persons dead and 180 wounded, with 17 in serious and very serious condition. Many of the people are in their late teens and 20s. About thirty minutes before the attack, an anonymous telephone call was received by Beit Shemesh police, with the caller telling the dispatcher that a car bomb attack would be taking place in downtown Jerusalem. Units were dispatched and a search conducted but nothing was found. The attack came at a time when the Ben-Yehuda pedestrian mall was filling with teens, as is the Saturday night custom. The blast location is a well-known Jerusalem spot for the young that take advantage of the many cafes and other eateries, opting to spend their Saturday nights on the Ben-Yehuda Mall. Officially no organization has taken credit for the brutal murders. However, a Hamas radio station in Palestinian Authority [PA/PLO] controlled areas was broadcasting joyous music and congratulating those who carried out the attack, Israel CHANNEL ONE television said. Israeli government officials blamed the PA/PLO and its leader Yasir Arafat. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who is in New York City ahead of a planned White House meeting on Monday, was informed of the situation shortly following the attack. PM Sharon has conferred with Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. Officials have confirmed that the prime minister has requested that US President George W. Bush move up the planned meeting. According to a senior official accompanying PM Sharon, the meeting will take place in Washington at noon on Sunday, after which the prime minister will head home. ............................ :: JERUSALEM BOMBINGS FOLLOW EARLIER MURDERS: By Friday, Palestinian terrorists had murdered seven Jews. Two Palestinian terrorists opened fire while running from the Afula Central Bus Station to the nearby open-air market Tuesday morning, killing two Jews and wounding over 30 others. The victims were Michal Mor, 25, a mother of three from Rechasim (southeast of Haifa), and Noam Guzovsky, 23, of the nearby moshav Ramat Tzvi. Security forces gave chase, and a soldier finally shot and killed the terrorists. Islamic Jihad and Fatah [which is led by PLO leader Yasir Arafat] took joint responsibility for the attack, in revenge for Israel's killing of Abu Hanoud last Friday. Abu Hanoud was a leader in the Hamas terrorist organization. Some 20 kilometers [12.5 miles] to the west, police thwarted another serious attack when they caught two Arabs carrying a bag with a bomb and other explosive materials. Police safely detonated the bomb nearby. Later that night, Ettie Fahima, 45, of Netzer Hazani in Gush Katif, mother of four, was murdered near Kfar Darom as she was driving home. A terrorist crawled undetected from a house near the Kisufim junction and then opened fire on a bulletproof bus carrying children and on several cars. Miraculously, Ettie was the only fatality; three others were wounded. Four more Israelis were murdered Thursday. On Thursday afternoon, Islamic Jihad gunmen shot two Israeli soldiers near Baka el-Sharkiye, very close to the Green Line in the northwestern Shomron. The attack claimed the life of St.-Sgt. Yaron Pikholtz, 20, of Ramat Gan, and left a second soldier wounded in moderate condition. At around 8:30 PM, three Israelis were murdered when a suicide terrorist from a Jenin-area village (northern Shomron) detonated a powerful bomb on board a public bus, ripping it apart. The victims were Yechiav Elshad, 28, of Hadera; Inbal Weiss, 22, of Zikhron Yaakov; and a third person whose name was not released. Seven wounded remain hospitalized in Hadera's Hillel Yaffe Hospital. Fatah [which is led by PLO leader Yasir Arafat] and Islamic Jihad claimed joint responsibility for the murderous attack. ............................ :: IDF REENTERS PALESTINIAN AREAS IN WAKE OF ATTACKS: IDF units returned to the Palestinian-controlled areas around Jenin and severely tightened the blockades around Tulkarm and Shechem over the weekend, in response to high alerts of more terrorist attacks. "In light of the recent wave of terrorist attacks which emerged from the Palestinian Authority areas and killed seven Israelis and wounded dozens, infantry and armor units blockaded the city of Jenin and took up controlling positions around the city in Palestinian-controlled territory," an IDF statement said. "The access roads to the city were cut and are under full IDF control." Tanks and Golani Brigade infantry moved into the Palestinian-controlled heights surrounding Jenin early Saturday, reoccupying strategic positions they had abandoned only early Tuesday as a gesture to American mediator General [Ret.] Anthony Zinni and his team upon their arrival. Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer ordered the moves following a security assessment held in the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv on Friday afternoon. Security officials noted the extremely high level of warnings of further terror attacks, including the participation of Arafat's mainstream Fatah organization. ............................ :: ZINNI GETS BIRDS-EYE VIEW OF KILLINGS: Newly-appointed American mediators General [Ret.] Anthony Zinni and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs William Burns landed in Israel Monday. Their official mission is the achievement of a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians. The first stage of their mission was to have lasted two weeks, after which Zinni and Burns were to return to the US to brief President Bush on whatever progress may have been made. However, Zinni now said he will stay in the region "as long as it takes" to secure a truce. Zinni flew over Israel in a helicopter with PM Sharon Tuesday, hovering over the Israeli city of Afula minutes after two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israelis there. During the week Zinni was quoted as saying "An end of violence will be met by an end to the [Israeli] 'occupation' and the establishment of a Palestinian state [in the near future]." ............................ :: FOR SEVEN DAYS OF QUIET, SHARON WILL REWARD ARAFAT WITH A STATE: PM Sharon emphasized again Thursday that he will not give in on his demand for seven days of total quiet before beginning to implement the Mitchell Report, but then said that if in fact quiet is attained, he is willing to grant the Palestinian Authority a demilitarized state: "At the end of the process, after we pass through this period of no terrorism and quiet and co-existence and cooperation in various areas, at the end we will reach a solution that has a Palestinian state." ............................ :: WAQF IS DESTROYING TEMPLE MOUNT WALL: Engineering tests conducted by the Antiquities Authority on the southern wall of the Temple Mount have proven conclusively that sections of the wall are in the intermediate stages of collapse, likely due to Waqf construction work over past years at Solomon's Stables just above the site. The center of the deformation, which extends 190 square meters [7 square miles], is 30 meters [32 yards] west of the southeastern corner of the wall, and 9.5 meters [10 yards] from the top of the wall. "If not treated, the problem is a source of danger in the medium-term (in a range of a number of years), and its collapse may cause irreversible damage to the structure," states the Antiquities Authority's July survey obtained by THE JERUSALEM POST. ............................ :: ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS THWARTED: The Fatah Al Aksa Brigade confirmed Monday several of its members had been involved in a foiled attempt to assassinate PM Sharon and vowed to continue in its attempts to kill him. The group said Israeli security forces arrested three members of a five-man cell before they had a chance to attack Sharon's home in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City. Meanwhile, a group called the Popular Army Vanguards, said to be affiliated with Fatah, claimed responsibility Monday for the roadside bomb attack on the IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Shaul Mofaz's convoy on Sunday evening near Beit Haggai in the Hebron Hills. One of the two bombs found at the site exploded near the first jeep of the convoy but caused no injuries. The second bomb was later defused by sappers. The IDF Spokesman said, sappers found three additional bombs at the site where Mofaz's convoy had passed Sunday night. The ISA has recently revealed the Hamas terrorist cell which perpetrated the shooting attack during which IDF reserve officer Captain Eyal Sela was killed on 6 November. Members of the cell also planned to attack Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer at the entrance to the Kirya in Tel Aviv. These cells were responsible for the murder of the teenage boy Yuri Gochin of Pisgat Ze'ev, as well as the placing of bombs in the Galilee and Shomron. The cell members were trained in Iraq, and had planned to carry out major attacks in Ben-Gurion International Airport and in downtown Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Money and materials bound for the terrorists was smuggled into the PA/PLO in the car of Palestinian Authority VIP Abed Razek Yichye; the Oslo accords stipulated that VIP cars must be allowed into the PA/PLO without being checked by Israel. ............................ :: IDF TOO MUCH FOR SYRIA: Syria's main goal is to get back the Golan Heights, but at the same time it is cautious because it fears its army is inferior to the IDF, Deputy Chief of General Staff Maj.-Gen Moshe Ya'alon said Monday. It is for this reason that Syria has developed B and C Scud missiles that contain a chemical warhead and have a range of 500 kilometers [310 miles] to act as a deterrent opposite Israel, Ya'alon said. Syria, the deputy chief of staff said, continues to support and assist terrorist organizations such as the Hizb'Allah in Lebanon and the Palestinian terrorist organizations based in Damascus.
