I don't see the contradiction here. Only the reader's assumptions
provide the temporal links here between the events being quoted.

Interpretation: News delivered outside the classroom (but not by TV)
                TV images seen (& commented upon) later in day.

Personlally, I received the news whilst in the shower at home (not via
TV) - and, 'saw an airplane hit the tower' via a Web-cast in
the lab some time later, and thought "wow, I bet that's not being
piloted". No contradiction there.

More interestingly, is GW saying that he is/was a pilot ? (or was he just
describing his flight passenger or substance abuse  experience ? (ha-ha)
