Elite Canadian commandos get marching orders Last Updated: Thu Dec 6 14:15:24 2001 OTTAWA - Members of the Canadian army's secretive anti-terrorist unit Joint Task Force Two or JTF-2, are on the move and may be heading to Afghanistan. INDEPTH: Target Terrorism: Canada's Military A spokesperson for the Department of National Defence says elements of the unit are deploying from Canada to an undisclosed location in the Middle East. The spokesperson says soldiers from the unit will join special forces troops from other countries involved in the U.S.-led war on terrorism. David Pratt Ottawa is saying very little else about the unit, which is based in Dwyer, Ont., not far from Ottawa. According to MP David Pratt, chair of Parliament's Defence Committee, JTF-2's commanders "don't want to tip their hand in terms of what their specific capabilities are, and I think that's very prudent of them. "In some respects, the less said about JTF-2 the better." BACKGROUNDER: In the terrorism crunch, Canada has JTF2 BACKGROUNDER: Commodore Jean-Pierre Thiffault, chief of 'Operation Apollo' The special unit was created in the early 1990s when the RCMP gave up its counter terrorism role to the army. The unit is divided into two sections: One specializes in so-called black ops, or domestic crises like hostage takings. The other specializes in green ops, which include military tasks. David Rudd David Rudd, executive director of the Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies, said the soldiers of JTF-2 are not trained to "take and hold ground." "What they do is infiltrate into dangerous areas behind enemy lines, look for key targets and take them out. They don't go out to arrest people. They don't go out there to hand out food parcels. They go out to kill targets." U.S. special forces are already on the ground in Afghanistan, along with Marines.
