NASA has notified Don Campbell, Associate Director of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center at Arecibo and Head of the Radar Astronomy Group, that all funding for Arecibo radar studies will be terminated on January 1 2002. The Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society believes that "the Arecibo program should not be terminated to meet an arbitrary deadline." The Planetary Society "strongly condemns NASA's decision, announced today, to terminate radar observations of Near Earth Objects (NEOs) from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.
