China urged to help solve Kashmir issue BEIJING, Dec 22: President Gen Pervez Musharraf has asked China to use its influence for resolving the Kashmir issue and reducing tension on the Line of Control. Addressing a select gathering of members of Chinese think-tanks, policy-makers, scholars and newspaper editors at a breakfast meeting on Friday, he said the Kashmir issue was the main cause of tension in the region. The world community, he stressed, must put pressure on India to resolve it, for ensuring peace and stability in the region. President Musharraf said he had requested Chinese President Jiang Zamin, during his meeting with him on Thursday, to use his influence for the settlement of Kashmir dispute. During his one- and- a- half hours keynote address, he gave a detailed account of the prevailing situation in the region, with particular reference to recent developments in Kashmir and Afghanistan. He elaborated that Pakistan's position in regard to its support to war against terrorism and efforts to restore peace in Afghanistan. About his visit to China, Gen Musharraf said it aimed at renewing Pakistan's commitment to maintain existing strategic partnership and to take necessary steps to strengthen it in all spheres of life. Drawing attention to Indian threats, following an attack on Indian parliament building, he said that these could lead to a dangerous situation. He added: "There is a high degree of tension between the two nuclear states." This situation could further escalate if the root cause of the problem was not properly addressed. While fighting against terrorism, Gen Musharraf asserted, the international community should go into its root cause, which was political in nature and might be because of ignoring just rights of the people. He categorically stated: "No event whatsoever in the region or around the world could ever change the strategic nature of Sino-Pakistan relations." He expressed his strong desire to continue warm and cordial relationship with China. China, he added, would continue to be a cornerstone of Pakistan's foreign policy. "We view with proper satisfaction the commonality of views between China and Pakistan on all regional and international issues". They, he added, were enjoying excellent cooperation in all regional and international issues of bilateral relations. He said his country considered China's international role a factor of peace and stability in the region and around the world as well. Turning to Pakistan's position against terrorism, he said: "We condemn and oppose all types of terrorism the world over." The president dispelled the misconceptions of associating religion of Islam with terrorism. None of each one of the individuals involved in acts of terrorism was a religious extremist. The motivation force was not the religion. He said the suicide attacks in the US were mainly the result of political causes and disputes, having no religious grounds. While striking at terrorists, he said, the world community should address their root causes.-APP __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
