Queen and Sir Elton put tiaras on show

THE Royal Family has lent its most beautiful and historic tiaras,
some of which have never been on public display, for an exhibition in
London.
The Russian Fringe tiara worn by the Queen when she married Prince
Philip in 1947 will be one of the highlights at the Victoria & Albert
Museum.

It was made for Queen Mary, the Queen's grandmother, in 1919 from
diamonds believed to have belonged to George III.
The Russian Fringe is one of four tiaras lent by the Queen for the
exhibition organised by Geoffrey Munn, managing director of the
leading West End jewellers Wartski and an expert on BBC Television's
Antiques Roadshow.
They include the Oriental Circlet, designed by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria, which
has frequently been worn by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
Princess Margaret has loaned three of her tiaras for the exhibition which opens on
March 21 and which coincides with the Queen's Golden Jubilee, although it will not be
part of the official events.
The Princess Royal, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Prince and Princess Michael
of Kent have also lent tiaras. Twenty of the 200 to be exhibited belong or used to
belong to the Royal Family and others have been loa
ned by continental royalty.
"We decided to have the exhibition because the story of the tiara in the last 200
years is spectacular," said Richard Edgcumbe, deputy director of metalwork at the
Victoria & Albert Museum.
He said: "In the entire field of jewellery, no type of object has been more dramatic
in its design or richer in its associations. Tiaras have crowned the heads of women at
the centre of the grandest state and private occa
sions."
Mr Munn sent hundreds of letters to royalty, aristocrats, show business personalities
and collectors to track down pieces for the exhibition.
The response was astonishing. The Duke of Westminster is lending six tiaras and
Vivienne Westwood the fashion designer, is lending one she wears when cycling around
London.
Sir Elton John was so keen to lend the rhinestone tiara that he bought in a bride's
shop in Los Angeles that he brought it into Wartski personally three days after
receiving Mr Munn's letter.
Joanna Lumley, one of the stars of the television comedy Absolutely Fabulous, has
agreed to lend a tiara that once belonged to the 19th century Shakespearean actress
Ellen Terry.
Some of the tiaras have extraordinary histories. One, which belongs to the Grand Duke
of Hesse in Germany, was in an air crash in which five of his family and six other
people were killed.
Almost everything was destroyed but the moonstone and turquoise tiara survived in a
strongbox.
Another tiara, which once belonged to Theresa, Marchioness of Londonderry, nearly met
an undignified end when she dropped it down a lavatory at Westminster Abbey.
