Vanessa Leggett, 33, was imprisoned after she refused to hand over notes and recordings to a federal grand jury investigating Robert Angleton, a Houston bookmaker whose wife, Doris, was murdered in 1997. Ms. Leggett has been in a federal detention center since July 20, when a federal judge found her in contempt of court for refusing to turn over the notes. Disclosing the information would have broken a confidentiality promise she made with those she interviewed, she said. U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, and Ms. Leggett's attorney, Mike DeGeurin, sent letters to U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft seeking to have her released before Christmas. Both failed. In her Nov. 21 letter to Mr. Ashcroft, Ms. Jackson Lee said Ms. Leggett should be released on bail for humanitarian reasons. "If ever there was a case in which the crime simply didn't fit the punishment, this most surely is the case," Ms. Jackson Lee wrote. Greg Serres, interim U.S. attorney for South Texas, has said he would continue to oppose bail for Ms. Leggett until she complies with the grand jury subpoena. He could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday. Robert Angleton was acquitted in 1998 of state charges of hiring his brother Roger Angleton to kill his wife. Mr. DeGeurin said a federal grand jury subpoenaed Ms. Leggett's notes and taped interviews for a book she planned to write about the killing. On April 16, 1997, Doris Angleton was shot a dozen times in the head and chest by an intruder in her River Oaks home. Her body was discovered by her husband, a former millionaire bookie to the city's monied class, when he came home from a daughter's softball game. Roger Angleton committed suicide in February 1998 before being tried for capital murder. He left behind a suicide note denying that his brother had anything to do with the killing. Ms. Leggett's prison term could end Jan. 4, when the grand jury ends its investigation. Mr. DeGeurin said in Tuesday's editions of the Houston Chronicle that he plans to file a request for Ms. Leggett's release with the U.S. Supreme Court soon.
