French al-Qaeda fighter's London links

BRITISH intelligence services are investigating the London links of a
French al-Qaeda fighter who froze to death in the retreat from Tora
Bora.
The body of Herv� Djamel Loiseau, 28, was found by villagers south of
the mountain cave complex where Osama bin Laden was said to have been
hiding. He had apparently been abandoned by other members of bin
Laden�s network
as they tried to flee to the Pakistan border after US bombing of the caves. His body
was buried in northwest Pakistan on Christmas Eve.
M Loiseau, who was born in Paris to an Algerian father and French mother, had left
Heathrow on March 11 last year for Lahore to join al-Qaeda, according to papers found
on his body.
The French authorities have asked British security services to investigate M Loiseau�s
stay in London and whether he underwent training in Britain.
London had served as a base for other Islamic fanatics, such as Zacarias Moussaoui,
the Frenchman accused in America in connection with the attacks on September 11.
He was described yesterday by his father, Said, as a fun-loving, easygoing youth who
had been brainwashed by Islamic militants. His father said that Herv� had become a
practising Muslim during his military service in Colm
ar, eastern France, in the early 1990s. Until then he had frequented nightclubs,
listened to pop music and had had a succession of girlfriends.
�But when he came back from the army, he didn�t want me to put on music and he tore
down pictures and photographs from the walls of our flat,� his father said. �It�s as
though he had had an injection in the head, as thoug
h he had been brainwashed. He fell out with his mother because he wanted her to cover
herself from head to feet.
�He wasn�t aggressive. He was easily influenced � a real sheep. That�s why they
managed to indoctrinate him.�
He told the newspaper Le Parisien that his son had begun to meet Muslim extremists in
the Belleville district of Paris, getting up at 5am to pray there. In 1998 he left for
Saudi Arabia and his family had not heard from h
im since.
When his body was discovered in the mountain range leading to Tora Bora, it was
clothed in only a jacket, two T-shirts and combat trousers. Temperatures fall well
below zero in the area. He had on him some money, a pair o
f scissors and two calcium pills.
Although M Loiseau was buried in Parachinar in Pakistan, his father
said he wanted to repatriate the body to France. �With his death I
have lost a little bit of myself. I hope it will be possible to bring
the body back here.�
