Man admits illegally selling potential nuclear triggers A US physicist who went on the run for 16 years has pleaded guilty to unlawfully exporting potential nuclear triggers to a company in Israel in 1982. Richard Smyth entered his guilty plea before Judge Pamela Riemer in Los Angeles as part of a deal with federal prosecutors, who agreed to drop several other counts. Smyth, 72, was first accused of the crimes in 1985 but fled the country and lived in Spain before his arrest earlier this year. Sentencing was scheduled for February 28. The maximum sentence is seven years in prison and a $110,000 (�77,000) fine. Defence attorney James Riddet refused to comment on Smyth's motive for exporting the devices to Heli Corporation, but said he would address the issue during sentencing. The original 30-count indictment involved the alleged export of krytrons, two-inch devices that can be used in nuclear weapons or photocopying machines. A licence or approval from the US State Department must be obtained to ship them. Smyth pleaded guilty to exporting the devices without a licence and making false statements or false documents by signing or approving invoices to send the material to Israel in November and December 1982. Heli Corporation was owned at the time by Arnon Milchan, an Israeli-born arms trader who became a successful Hollywood film producer. His hits have included Pretty Woman and LA Confidential. In an interview on the CBS television programme 60 Minutes last year, Mr Milchan denied any involvement in the krytron deal but said he had allowed the Israeli government to use his company as a conduit for trading with the US. Israel returned most of the krytrons after Smyth's indictment and contended they were never intended for use in a nuclear weapons programme.
