:: ARAFAT: CHRISTIAN MARTYR OR MUSLIM TERRORIST? Much to his dismay, PLO
leader Yasir Arafat spent Christmas Eve in Ram'Allah. He had been trying to
go to Beit Lechem (Bethlehem) in order to attend Christmas Mass but was
barred from doing so by the Israeli government. Israeli Cabinet Minister
Danny Naveh said from the Knesset podium Wednesday: "Arafat is not a
Christian saint but rather a Muslim terrorist." Naveh was delivering the
government response to the Knesset inquiry into why Arafat was not allowed
to visit Beit Lechem for Christmas. Naveh went on to recount instances of
Muslim Arabs who raped young Christian Arab girls while the PLO police did
nothing to stop or prevent the crimes. Naveh documented his charges and
asked, "How can Arafat be portrayed in the world as a Christian saint, when
such atrocities occur under his jurisdiction?"

Meanwhile, former Israeli liaison to the US Congress Yoram Ettinger said
Tuesday that Arafat and the Palestinian Authority [PA/PLO] have succeeded
in reducing the 60% majority of Christians in Beit Lechem and neighboring
Beit Jala to a 20% minority. Arafat has Islamisized Beit Lechem, since
assuming control in 1995, by changing its municipal boundaries and that of
its twin towns, Beth Jala and Beth Sakhur. They used to constitute the
Christian enclave in Judea and Samaria. Arafat severely tipped demography
there, by incorporating (into the 65,000 residents) an additional 30,000
Moslems of three neighboring refugee camps, Dehaisheh, El-Ayda' and
El-Azeh. Arafat has intensified the Islamization of Beit Lechem by adding
to its population a few thousand Bedouins of the Ta'amrah tribe, located
east of Beit Lechem, encouraging Moslem immigration from Hebron to Beit
Lechem, and inducing Christian emigration/flight away from Beit Lechem. A
similar process has also afflicted the Christians of Ram'Allah (20,000).
Ettinger charges that local Muslim Fatah gangs [controlled by Arafat]
continue to desecrate Christian cemeteries, churches, convents, and
monasteries. Also, the chant, "After we do away with the Saturday people
[the Jews], we shall take care of the Sunday people [the Christians]," has
been heard during anti-Israel PLO rallies. PLO terrorists shooting at
Jerusalem's southern neighborhood Gilo purposely position themselves next
to or in Christian homes, hotels, and churches in hopes of creating
Christian casualties when Israel returns fire. The Christian casualties
provide "proof" for the PLO propaganda machine to create the illusion that
Israel attacks Christian property. According to an eye-witness account by
former US Senator Connie Mack, "[The Palestinian Christian] was arrested
and detained [by the PLO] on charges of selling land to Jews. He denied the
charge, since he owned no land. He was beaten and hung from the ceiling by
his hands for many hours. After two weeks, he was transferred to a larger
prison where he was held for eight months without trial... These Christians
conveyed to me a message of fear and desperation." (Senate speech, March 3,
2000).

:: ISRAELIS MARCH AROUND THE TEMPLE MOUNT: The Fast of the 10th of Tevet
commemorates the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem which led to the
destruction of the First and Second Temples in 586 BCE and 70 CE. Since 586
BCE it has been a day of fasting and mourning for the Jewish people with
special prayers for the redemption and rebuilding of the Temple. This year
the fast fell on 25 December 2001. The Israeli people again commemorated
the day with great mourning but at the same time with great prayers and
hopes that the Temple will soon be rebuilt. The Temple Mount and Land of
Israel Faithful Movement and many Israelis commemorated the day by marching
around the Temple Mount which is still closed to Israelis and non-Muslims.
When the marchers came close to the gates of the holy hill of G–d, they
prayed the special prayers of the 10th Tevet and called on G–d from the
bottom of their hearts to soon fulfill His end-time promises. (Complete
details of the march can be found at: http://www.templemountfaithful.org)
During the march an Israeli sustained light head wounds from rocks thrown
by Arab assailants.

The government is not acting to stop work being carried out by the Waqf on
the Temple Mount that could be damaging our Jewish heritage, prominent
Israeli author A.B. Yehoshua said over the weekend. The writer was one of a
dozen persons who signed a blistering seven-page letter the non-partisan
Committee Against the Destruction of Antiquities on the Temple Mount sent
to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon last week. The committee comprises
archaeologists, writers, jurists, and politicians who have been decrying
Waqf work at the site for two years. Like his predecessor, newly appointed
Jerusalem police spokesman Kobi Zrihan has repeatedly denied that any
digging is being carried out on the Temple Mount, claiming the latest
pictures produced by the committee are of "approved surfacing work carried
out ... at the entrance to an office that does not contain any
archeological artifacts" -- a claim that is mocked by leading
archaeologists. Yehoshua proposed that a joint team of Jews, Muslims, and
Christians be responsible for supervising work at the site. Waqf officials
claim the whole area is a mosque, in which they may do as they please. A
spokesman for Internal Security Minister Uzi Landau said Friday that Landau
was holding meetings and consultations following the latest reports.

:: WHO DOES NUSSEIBEH WORK FOR? Several hundred banner-carrying members of
the Israeli Left marched down Jerusalem's main streets Friday to help the
budding political career of an articulate Arab academic named Sari
Nusseibeh, Yasir Arafat's representative in Jerusalem. The demonstrators
were keenly aware that Nusseibeh was recently named by Arafat as Minister
for Jerusalem Affairs in the PA/PLO. But the demonstrators (which included
former Israeli Justice Minister Yossi Beilin) probably did not know that
before going to work for Arafat, Dr. Sari Nusseibeh went to work for Iraqi
president Saddam Hussein trying to guide missile attacks on Israel. During
the 1991 Gulf War, Nusseibeh was caught contacting Iraqi intelligence
officials in order to help direct the SCUD rocket attacks of Saddam Hussein
in which four Israelis were killed (one directly) and many wounded from 39
missile strikes. In an exclusive interview with THE MEDIA LINE, Col. (Res.)
Shalom Harari described how the "moderate" Nusseibeh would tell Iraqi
officials, for example, "Don't shoot in the Negev but rather shoot some
place else for better effect." (Harari is a former Arab Affairs Advisor for
the Israeli Defense Ministry) Nusseibeh was arrested by the Shin Bet (today
known as SHABAK) and put in administrative detention without trial for
several weeks. After the Gulf War ended, Israeli officials, under pressure
from the Israeli Left (of which Yossi Beilin is a member) allowed Nusseibeh
a kind of "plea bargain" under which he voluntarily left the country for
three years, said Harari.

:: ASSAD READY TO RENEW TALKS: Syrian President Bashar Assad is ready to
renew negotiations with Israel at the point they left off under his father,
Israel Radio reported Sunday, quoting a secret document sent from
Washington to Jerusalem. Mideast envoy William Burns met Assad in Damascus
last week and raised the possibility of renewing talks with Israel. Assad
reportedly said he was ready to restart talks unconditionally, but then
repeated the traditional Syrian position that any negotiations would have
to begin at the point where they ended in early 2000, when his father,
Hafez, was still in power. Talks between Israel and Syria broke down in
early 2000 after a round of negotiations at Shepherdstown in the US,
between then prime minister Ehud Barak and Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk
Shara. The main point of contention was the exact demarcation of the
border. Like his predecessors, Barak refused to accept Assad's demand that
Israel withdraw to the banks of the Kinneret, giving the Syrians direct
access to the lake.

:: ZINNI WILL WAIT UNTIL CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT: In response to an appeal
made by the PA/PLO on Friday, the US State Department said that peace envoy
Anthony Zinni would return to the region when conditions were appropriate.
Zinni, a retired Marine Corps general, left the region earlier this month
after witnessing some of the worst violence of the 15-month Palestinian
uprising against Israel. The US envoy is not expected to return to the
region in the coming week. On Thursday, Zinni is slated to meet IDF Chief
of Staff Shaul Mofaz and Israeli Ambassador to Washington D.C. David Ivry.
The three will discuss the groundwork for the resumption of Zinni's mission.

Meanwhile, Israeli defense minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer has welcomed what
he says are moves by the Palestinians to control terrorists carrying out
attacks on Israel. He said that if the trend continued movement could be
made on implementing the Mitchell peace plan. He said on Thursday that the
Palestinian leadership was making progress in cracking down on terrorists.
(Meanwhile, in the town of Ram'Allah, terrorists riddled an Israeli bus
with bullets. There were no injuries. There were also clashes between
Palestinian protesters and Israeli troops. In addition, Israeli forces
killed a suicide bomber near the Netzarim settlement in the central Gaza
Strip before he was able to detonate the bomb he had strapped to his body.)
On the other hand, on Saturday night, Ben-Eliezer warned that the
Palestinians are training suicide bombers and preparing car bombings as
part of "an infrastructure for war." Ben-Eliezer was recently elected
chairman of the Labor Party. He stated he intends to work out a compromise
whereby both he and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres will have the title of
"Labor's representative minister," as permitted by the party's coalition
agreement with the Likud.

:: SHARON CLARIFIES POSITION ON TALKS WITH PLO: Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
announced Thursday that he will not agree to a Palestinian state before the
cabinet deliberates the issue. Sharon reiterated that there will be no
"diplomatic negotiations" with the PLO under fire, rather "negotiations for
a cease-fire." Regarding the Abu Ala-Peres agreement in the making, Sharon
said that there are many problems with it. Minister of National
Infrastructure Avigdor Lieberman (Yisrael Beitenu Party) criticized Prime
Minister Sharon for breaking his word by allowing Peres to negotiate with
the PLO without consent from the rest of the coalition partners. It was
revealed Monday that not only was PM Sharon fully aware of the clandestine
talks being held between Peres and Abu Ala, but that he expressed general
support for them as well. The "Abu Ala-Peres Agreement" contains four stages:

** 1) – Within six weeks a full cease-fire, including an end to all
fighting and terror, an end to all blockades, a freezing of all Yesha
communities, an end to all killing and assassinations, and a unification of
all Palestinian security forces;
** 2) – Within eight weeks Israel will recognize a Palestinian state in
Judea, Samaria and Gaza and the Arabs will recognize the State of Israel on
the basis of UN resolutions 242 and 338;
** 3) – Within nine to twelve months, negotiations leading to a permanent
settlement, including a schedule for withdrawal of Israeli troops,
refugees, Jerusalem, settlements, security and water. The process will
conclude no later than 18 to 24 months; and,
** 4) – An international role concerning the negotiations, a peace-keeping
force, economic and financial aid to the Palestinians, area economic
cooperation, and arbitration of issues still undecided.
