Such is the claim of Dr. Ian Edwards, head of education at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. During a recent seminar, Dr. Edwards recounted to the audience that the story of flying reindeer originated with the Sami people of Lapland, one of the oldest indigenous cultures in the world. It later spread south to Central Europe in the 19th Century and eventually morphed into the tale small children of the world know so well today. In the beginning, the story was neither so wholesome nor fit for consumption by children: The Sami people used to feed brightly colored red and white "fly-argic" mushrooms to their reindeer and then, drink the animal's urine in order to get a more safe and processed form of the drug into their own systems. The effect of the "fly-argic" mushrooms would have been similar to taking LSD. According to Dr. Edwards, one of the likely effects of taking the drug would have been for them to believe that they were flying with their reindeer through space, looking down on the world below. Further, he suggests that the red coat of Father Christmas himself may well have been inspired by the bright color of the red mushrooms. All of this behavior is described in a museum in Lapland and may date back to pre-Christian times, he said-although he did allow that the practice had diminished in recent years. There is no word yet from Santa on how long this theory and the Press he is giving it will move Dr. Edwards from the "naughty" to the "nice" list.
