Colombian rebels ordered to quit safe haven The Colombian rebels, which three IRA members allegedly trained in terrorism techniques, has been warned it has 24 hours to leave its safe haven. Marxist guerrilla group FARC has been told to evacuate an area the size of Switzerland by January 10, or face immediate military action by the government. The move comes after peace talks between the government and Columbia's largest rebel force collapsed. FARC was the group, which alleged IRA members Niall Connolly, Martin McCauley and Jim Monaghan, were training before being arrested. The arrests increased pressure on an already strained peace process, and the government banned foreigners from FARC controlled territory. All three are being held under investigative detention in a high-security military prison in Bogota, and are due to be either released or charged by the end of February. The American Congress has launched an investigation into their activities but Sinn Fein has called for their immediate release, claiming there is no evidence against them. The collapse of the peace process is likely to lead to a resumption of hostilities between the US-backed government army and the rebel force. FARC has 17,000 members and has been at war with the government for 38 years in its effort to establish a Marxist regime. They agreed to talks in return for control of an area in the south of the country. It has also been linked to drug-running by the United States, who claim it plays a major role in supplying cocaine.
