YITZHAK RABIN'S ASSASSINATION
AND THE HASSAN SABRI STREET MURDERS
by Samir Raafat
Egyptian Mail, December 9, 1995
Many don't realize Zamalek's Hassan Sabri Street was originally
Gabalaya Street reference to the nearby fish grotto. It was only
after wartime Prime Minister Hassan Sabri Pasha succumbed to a fatal
heart attack while reading the Speech to the Throne in the November
1940 opening of parliament that it changed its name. Since Sabri
lived at No. 47 (changed to No. 9) Gabalaya Street, what better
homage by the Cairo Governorate then to rename it after him.
A second dramatic event which Zamalkawites have forgotten is the tragic fate that
befell another personality who died on Gabalaya Street four years later. This time
however it had nothing to with heart attacks and old age
for the person in question was a healthy 64. His premature death was brought on by
cold-blooded murder.
The scene of the crime was right by the gates of a luxury rococo two-story villa
leased by the British government for the Right Honorable Walter Edward Guinness a.k.a.
Lord Moyne. Because of its strategic location, at the
convergence of Gezira and Hassan Sabri Streets, the villa overlooked the exclusive
Gezira Club's polo and golf fields making it a most suitable residence for the British
minister of state posted to the Middle East.
But what was Lord Moyne doing in Egypt and why was he murdered on Zamalek's Hassan
Sabri Pasha Street?
The 1st Baron Moyne (1880-1944) was the scion of the wealthy Guinness family which
owned a beer empire and whose name would become linked with the famous book of records
launched a few years after his untimely death. Befo
re his appointment to Churchill's war cabinet in 1942, Moyne was secretary of state
for the colonies and leader of the House of Lords. In his new posting, he ranked
senior to Sir Miles Lampson, the British ambassador who
reportedly gave such a hard time to young King Farouk.
It was from across Egypt's eastern border, technically under Moyne's jurisdiction,
wherefrom came his assassins with orders to finish him off. The premeditated murder
was meant to send a clear message from various Zionist
terrorist organizations operating inside British Mandated Palestine, directly to the
highest echelons of the alleged pro-Arab British Foreign Office: STOP TAMPERING WITH
JEWISH IMMIGRATION OR ELSE! Through killings and o
ther terrorist acts, militant Jews sought to bring about by force developments
favorable to the realization of their political aims. The creation of Eretz Israel.
Lord Moyne's trained assassins Eliahou Bet-Zouri and Eliahou al-Hakim, both in their
early twenties, were members of the Stern/LHI Jewish terrorist group controlled of
Yitzhak Shamir, the same man who, years later, would
become Prime Minister of Israel. It was Shamir who reportedly organized and gave the
orders for Moyne's murder. His terrorist gang, which symbolized the violence and the
demoniac arm of Zionism, was one of the warring spl
inter groups determined to reach its goals at whatever price even if this embroiled
the lives of innocent Arabs, Britons or Jews.
The Eliahous had prepared for their heinous mission most of their adolescent life.
Their Yishuv teachers had drilled into them a strong sense of religious nationalism so
that while one of the Eliahous was described as an
"experienced maker of bombs and a scholar, a good son and friend, respected for his
integrity but could also take human lives," the other "felt himself an heir to the
Kingdom of David and wrote fervently of his namesake t
he Prophet Eliahou and the Galilean hills upon which he walked". Similar words,
identical attitudes to those uttered recently by Yitzhak Rabin's killer, the much
mediatized gum- chewing 25 year old university student, Yig
al Amir.
After successfully completing their bloody Zamalek assignment the Eliahous attempted a
bicycle escape but were quickly overtaken on Fouad al-Awal Bridge (renamed Boulak
Bridge, now Abou al-Ela). Confronted with irrefutabl
e evidence neither assassin denied his role in the crime. For them their cause was
holy and just. Both argued their case with steely logic and consistency.
But what has Moyne's murder got to do with Yitzhak Shamir's?
A keen observer will start off with the fact that Lord Moyne's assassination on
November 6 coincided 51 years later with the Prime Minister Rabin's state funeral and
that in both murders the assassins thought they were pl
aying out their part in changing the course of history.
He will then tell you that in both murders the victims were downed at point blank
range next to their official cars, Moyne as he was getting out on Gabalaya, Rabin as
he was getting in at King's Square, Tel-Aviv. Both vic
tims died in hospital from bullet wounds --three bullets each. But while Rabin's
bodyguard escaped unscathed, Lance-Corporal Fuller, Moyne's driver didn't. Fuller was
proclaimed dead on arrival at Gezira's Anglo-American
Hospital. Moyne would also die there a few hours later.
Another uncanny coincidence between the two murders is how the perpetrators of the
first murders are buried a few meters from the victim of the second. And that aside
from these apparent flukes and logistical similarities
, more may come to light once historians are through with their retrospect.
Now let's see the differences... or are they that different?
In the case of Lord Moyne the murderers received capital punishment and subsequently
hanged at the insistence of the British government despite pressures to the contrary
from powerful American Jewish groups. By telling ju
rors their clients' life stories, Eliahous' lawyers hoped public opinion would
conclude the defendants were victims of atrocities and betrayals levied against the
Jewish people in Europe and that in their tender age, both
Eliahous were casualties of post traumatic stress disorders, not unlike that
experienced by combat veterans.
But to the British the fact remained that the Eliahous had never been to Europe and
therefore could not have experienced anti-Semitism first hand. That there was no
question as to their ignoring the nature of their deed.
The Eliahous were cold-hearted killers who knew exactly what they were doing. The
sentence would pass and their would be no stay of execution. The two Eliahous were
hanged and then quietly buried in an empty corner of the
Jewish cemetery of Bassatine north east of the Cairo suburb of Maadi.
Yet, as the mood changed and as western psyche became increasingly imbued with a
feeling of collective guilt regarding WW II war crimes, the two Eliahous were
eventually exonerated. Extenuating circumstances were forever
invoked ranging from their being indirect victims of European anti-Semitism to their
having been erratic young zealots with a mission. Their decision to murder a gentile
whom they had never seen or met had been instigated
by a small group of radicals wishing to bring across a desperate message to the
forefront of world public opinion. As a result of incessant pressures and
manipulation, a new public opinion sentencing slowly re-surfaced.
The Eliahous were victims of circumstances! And somehow, with each new attempt at
exonerating them, the Eliahous presumed ages got younger until one of them had gone
back to being 17 years old.
Yet if one looks back at the days immediately following Lord Moyne's killing, the
Eliahous were publicly condemned in the most categorical terms by most mainstream
Jewish communities. Ha'aretz, the leading pre-Israel dail
y described the double-murder as "one of the worse abominations since Zionism began"
while the leader of World Zionism, Chaim Weizmann, (afterwards Israel's first
president and uncle of the present one) described the kill
ings as "a far more severe shock and more numbing than that of the death of my own
son." In his letter to Churchill, Weizmann wrote "I can hardly find words adequate to
express the deep moral indignation and horror which
I feel ... I know that these feelings are shared by Jewry throughout the world."
"Bet-Zouri and Hakim's supporters were lunatic terrorist groups," cried another Jewish
paper setting forth a wave of denunciation throughout Palestine as the Yishuv sought
to cleanse itself from the crime. Ben Gurion went
even further than his most diehard Zionist colleagues when he described the killers
as traitors to the Jewish people. "The bullet that struck down Lord Moyne was aimed
not only at him but at our hearts," wrote another Zi
onist leader.
The Zionist Review meanwhile declared "The dastardly acts of the 'Stern Gang' are
morally indefensible and politically crazy. Murder is alien to the high teachings of
Judaism. 'Thou shall not kill' is one of the ten Comma
ndments." Words which were confirmed by most Rabbis everywhere. In London Chief Rabbi
Hertz issued a stern statement: "I deem it my solemn duty to give expression to the
horror and sorrow of every Jew over the dastardly m
urder of a great public servant, Lord Moyne... the criminals are men crazed by the
fiendish butcheries of kith and kin in the human slaughterhouse of Poland".
Words and condemnations spoken and written in November 1944, yet so similar to those
we heard in November 1995 following Rabin's assassination.
With the passing of time, and as the mood changed, the Eliahous turned into legends.
As for the terrorist Stern/LHI Gang and its sister organizations, they were eventually
written up in history books as freedom fighters d
espite innocent blood on their hands. The State of Israel had become a reality. Rather
than reverse the tide against the fate of Palestine and the Palestinians, the world's
condemnation of Lord Moyne's assassination seemi
ngly brought forward Britain's exit from Mandated Palestine so that a major portion of
the two Eliahous' dream was realized four years after their crime. Thereafter, it was
a matter of time before the perpetrators of the
Hassan Sabri Street murders became martyrs, the subjects of folk tales, books and
poems.
Could this happen again? Could Rabin's killer whatever the trial's outcome, become
tomorrow's hero? Could he one day be exonerated just like Moyne's assassins, despite
the great embarrassment that this time around the vic
tim was a Jew --an unexpected eventuality that confused the prime minister's security
and bedeviled the moderate Jewish public at large all of whom were expecting an Arab
assassin.
Like Lord Moyne's murder, observers insist that Yitzhak Rabin's assassination was not
a one-off incident or the work of some isolated fanatic splinter group. The day after
Rabin's assassination it was clear Yigal Amir was
not a lone wolf or an unhinged psychotic acting from within a tiny conspiratorial
group of shtinkers or small time Arab informers. The home grown sabra assassin came
from Tel Aviv's liberal suburb of Herzliya and had the
benefit of up-front sympathy and support from very identically different and
determined groups both in Israel and the United States. And despite the condemning
majority in Israel who spoke out against Rabin's murder, the
re exists a silent approving minority represented in the Knesset by those Leah Rabin
found it difficult to shake hands with at her husband's funeral. In any case, the
coming Israeli elections will be a clear indication as
to how much supporters Amir really has.
One thing we do know however. The Eliahous were exonerated DESPITE earlier
condemnations and that they were the recipients of a sendoff usually reserved for
Israel's military heroes, many of whom died in the June 1967 and
October 1973 wars.
It was as a result on the Yom Kippur war, during an Egypto-Israeli prisoner exchange
in 1975, that the bodies of Eliahou al-Hakim and Eliahou Bet-Zouri were released to
the Israeli government by President Anwar al-Sadat.
The remains were flown to a cemetery in Jerusalem where the Eliahous were mourned as
military heroes. Hundreds of thousands, including the then-Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin filed past their state-laid coffins. These were
then buried with full military honors in Mount Herzl, the burial ground of Israel's
military and spiritual leaders, not far from where the slain Rabin was buried twenty
years later.
The moral of this story is that if a genuine peace solution is not reached soon in the
region, we mustn't be surprised or disappointed if the honors bestowed posthumously on
Moyne's killers are one day conferred on Rabin'
s assassin(s).
What became of Lord Moynes house on Hassan Sabri Street?
Once the home of Maurice A. Ades, a wealthy Jewish merchant, it was leased it during
WW II to general Wavell and then to Maud Momo Kahn and her husband General John
Marriott. The wealthy daughter of New York financier O
tto Kahn, Momo transformed the villa into an opulent townhouse adding oak doors and
paneling plus an assortment of white furniture among large fish bowls full of white
flowers. She also introduced a sunken bathtub fit for
a Roman Caesar. After Lord Moynes death, the Adeses returned temporarily before
selling the villa to Abdallah Izzat Bey. In the 1970s the house and garden (No. 4&6)
made way for the 30-story al-Abd building which togeth
er with the neighboring bloc of flats houses the Four Corners restaurant and a couple
of banks.
In the back, overlooking Bahr al-Aama (the Niles smaller branch) stands Embassy
Court an unassuming apartment building whose name evokes Zamalek's colonial past.
